Roy Wood
June 9, 1930 – May 4, 2022
Roy Wood, 91, of Fritch, Texas passed away on May 4, 2022, after a long illness under the great care and love of the home of Abundantly Blessed and Kindred Hospice.
Arrangements were made with Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors in Amarillo.
Roy worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 38 years beginning from the year 1948 at the age of 18 to the year 1986 at the age of 55. Roy received numerous awards while he worked for Phillips Petroleum. He was awarded as much as $14,000 for one of his suggestions. Roy was a valued employee, to say the least. He was an avid collector and very much a meticulous keeper of things that he collected. He cared greatly for the things that he possessed as he also cared just as great for his family which meant more to him than anything else in the world. He was always ready to help any family member out of a jam, especially his kids, of course. What were his hobbies? His hobbies were pretty much-having things to share with his friends and family. He bought a big boat with his hard-earned money to share with all and to go skiing and camping. He bought not one but four Harley Davidson motorcycles to share with the kids to ride. He always wanted everyone to have fun. He spent a lot of his money on vehicle wax, being such a meticulous keeper of his things but always bought the wax at sale price if possible. He was a smart and thrifty one for sure and at the same time a big giver. If you were the waiter at his table, you could count on a good tip and a big smile. Dining out with Roy and Shirley was always a pleasure whereas they always insisted on paying the bill. One thing he really enjoyed, maybe the most of all, was sitting out on the patio at the back of the house with family and friends after a cookout prepared by himself and his loving wife Shirley. All the family members would pitch in to bring food dishes and help serve up the food. And now as you stand in the big back yard of their home, which is sometimes referred to as “The Wood Ranch”, the earthly scent of the big cedar trees, planted by Roy and Shirley many years ago, fills the air, and you are reminded of the many get-togethers that commenced with happy family gathering ‘round and being together, which was something that meant so much to Roy. Those memories he was able to take with him on his journey to our Heavenly Father.
Roy was born to Claud and Helen Wood on June 9, 1930, in Cooper, Oklahoma. He married his wife, Shirley Litchford, on July 23, 1949, and they were married for 72 wonderful years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claud and Helen Wood, and his two brothers, Bill and Tom Wood.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wood of Fritch; sister, Lois Newman of Arkansas; and four children, Marsha Baker and her husband Terry Baker of Waxahachie, Ronnie Wood and his wife Cindy of Borger, Regina Brown and her husband Randall Brown of Borger, and Brett Wood and his wife Nilza of Borger. He was blessed with nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
