RoJeanne Thomas – January 27, 2018

RoJeanne Thomas passed away peacefully on January 27, 2018, at Bivins Pointe in Amarillo, TX, after spending her last two weeks surrounded by family and loving friends. She was 88 years old.
RoJeanne was born at her grandmother’s house in Hollene, NM, on October 10, 1929 and raised by parents Aurvil Helen Rose Price and Lloyd C. Price. She graduated from Clovis High School in 1947 and attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM.
RoJeanne began her career as a bookkeeper, working for her father at Collins Dairy in Clovis, NM, for eight years. She was married to Norman Thomas, from Tucumcari, NM, for 25+ years and had two daughters, Leesa (Thomas) Ferrero and Melanie (Thomas) McMullen.
The couple started their family in Clovis, where Leesa was born. Soon thereafter, RoJeanne’s life journey led her to Muleshoe, TX, where Melanie was born. The family lived there for almost eight years before moving to Levelland, TX, where she continued as a devoted mom and homemaker. She loved spending time with her daughters and friends, and she hosted regular Bridge Club gatherings at their home. She took flying lessons and passed her aviation test with flying colors, earning her solo Piper Pilot license. She flew the family’s single-engine airplane on many vacation trips to New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, and Arizona.
In 1965, RoJeanne moved to Amarillo, TX. She continued her career in finance, working in the accounting department of Center Plains Industries for 13 years. She also held a part-time accounting job at the popular Country Squire Dinner Theater for several years. After that, she worked in the administrative office of Bivins Memorial Nursing Home for 10 years until her retirement.
RoJeanne loved to do many activities, including playing all kinds of board and card games, cooking new recipes, and reading. She was very inquisitive and curious and interested in books and magazines about everything from history, finance, news and current events, politics, and biographies. She enjoyed watching the Olympics and professional sports (especially the Dallas Cowboys), along with college football and championship golf.
She was also a beloved “swim mom” and helped support the swim team at the Amarillo Aquatic Club (AAC). She worked in the results office of the AAC at every weekend swim meet, where she enjoyed cheering for the young athletes and spending time at the pool.
RoJeanne loved living in Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle area and was an energetic member of First Christian Church. She was active in the church, serving as a welcoming, always-smiling greeter for many years and treasurer of her Sunday school class. Every year, she attended the multi-denominational Amarillo women’s Bible study. Most recently, RoJeanne enjoyed retirement life and had made dozens of friends at her longtime home at Summit Place apartments.
RoJeanne was greatly loved and will be missed by all those who knew her. She always started each day with joy and determination, and she remained strong and independent to the very end of her long and happy life.
She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Lela Kay Wilson, of Santa Fe, NM. RoJeanne is survived by her two daughters, Leesa Ferrero of Round Rock, TX, and Melanie McMullen of Alameda, CA; her nephews Brent Wilson of Albuquerque, NM, Kevin Wilson of Clovis, NM, and Grant Wilson of Lubbock, TX. RoJeanne has six grandchildren: Dr. Sarah Ferrero (McDonough) of Temple, TX; Anna Ferrero (Vazquez) of McKinney, TX; Katy Ferrero of Austin, TX; Army Lt. Sam Ferrero currently stationed in S. Korea; Alex McMullen of San Francisco, CA; and Erin McMullen of Washington, D.C.
A family memorial commemorating her life journey will be held on her birthday in October 2018 during the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions or donations in her name to Meals on Wheels Amarillo.
