Rodney "Gene" Mezel – February 3, 2013


Rodney “Gene” Mezel, 90, of Amarillo, died Sunday, February 3, 2013.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd with Dr. Stan Coffey and the Rev. Dale Moreland, both of The Church at Quail Creek, officiating.  Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
He was born on January 6, 1923 in Claremore, Oklahoma to Ola and Jesse Mezel.  He graduated from High School in 1940.  Upon graduation, he went off to the civilian conservation corp camps to work for the works progress administration.  He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II.  He drove for Greyhound Bus Lines for over 38 years.
He married Lucy Summers on November 17, 1951 in Bernalillo, NM.
Gene was a lifelong mason and a member of the Church at Quail Creek
Gene loved to play poker, was an avid reader, and was a great story teller and historian.  He was the much beloved patriarch of his family and family meant everything to him.  In every sense, he was truly a member of the greatest generation.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Mezel and a sister, Trela Walker.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Mezel; a son, Gary Mezel and wife Claudia; two daughters, Teresa Krawecki and husband Rick and Gina Denney and husband Monty, all of Amarillo; eleven grandchildren, Tanner Mezel and wife Valerie; Joshua Mezel and wife Brittni; Natalie Villalobos and husband Anthony; Tiffany Alicia Smith; Anthony Robert Kachiros and wife Dixie; David Chad Smith and wife Roselyn; Cody Smith and wife Kim; Brandon Lewis; LucyBeth Self; Melissa Millican and husband James; and Timothy Self; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Craig Methodist and BSA Hospice for their loving care of Gene during these last months.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and suggests memorial to the food ministry @ The Church at Quail Creek.
