Robert Durl Beene, 82, of Amarillo, TX passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.
Memorial services will be at 3:00 P.M., Monday, May 23, 2022, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Thomas Miller officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Robert was born in Amarillo, TX on January 27, 1940, to Robert and Golda Beene. He graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1958 where he lettered 2 years in football and 3 years in baseball and got the first base hit in Palo Duro Dons baseball history. Robert was recruited to play college baseball and elected to play semi-pro baseball for 3 years.
He started coaching Kids Inc. sports at the age of 20 where he won City Championships in football. He also helped start North Randall County Little League baseball where he served on the board for 6 years and coached the 1986 All-Star Team. Robert also coached his two sons in multiple sports while they were growing up. He also served on the Amarillo Bowling Association for 8 years eventually serving as Vice President. Robert won the Amarillo Bowling Association Man of the Year Award in 1985-1986.
Robert served in the Texas National Guard for 6 years. He went to work at Plains Chevrolet as a front-end mechanic alongside his dad for 15 years. Robert and his father were considered the best front-end mechanics in the area. He retired from Plains Chevrolet after 29 years and then went to work for Pro 1 Automotive for 21 years.
Robert was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns, and Los Angeles Lakers. He also enjoyed watching his favorite driver in Nascar, Dale Earnhardt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Golda Beene.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Beene and wife Melissa of Amarillo, and Royce Beene of Amarillo; a sister, Frankie McCrady and husband Larry of Canyon; two nephews, John McCrady and wife Tammy of Burleson, TX, and Rory McCrady and wife Cindy of Weatherford, TX; and two grandchildren, Rylee and Robert Beene.
