Robert Winston Curtis II

June 21, 1945 — September 13, 2024

Amarillo

Robert Winston Curtis II, 79, met Jesus on Friday, September 13, 2024, at daybreak. Winston was long-winded so his children thought his obituary should be too. He often prayed about his home going and couldn’t wait to get there. He is no longer missing out on any thing now that he is face to face with Jesus, his Savior and greatest love.

Winston was born in Amarillo, Texas on June 21, 1945. He was born the first day of summer, and he loved being in the sun. He was born to Wink and Virginia Curtis, surrounded by a community that loved Jesus, Football, and Texas. These three things shaped everything about him. After graduating Amarillo High in the Class of ’64 he enlisted in the US Navy where he served from 1967-1969 in the South Pacific during the Vietnam War.

He returned to Amarillo to start a career, whereupon he met and fell in love with his bride of 53 years, Kathleen King. They eloped July 31, 1971. They built a beautiful life together raising their four children while faithfully serving their local communities. Most importantly they dedicated their time and energy to loving their church families while he pastored 5 churches in Oklahoma and Texas from 1988-2020. During this time Winston had the privilege of serving on the Southern Baptist International Mission Board. He served over the NAME North African Middle East region. This is where he developed a love and commitment to the great state of Israel. This board commissions the missionaries to their assigned fields. His life was full of love and adventure because he told God “yes”, most of the time.

Upon leaving full-time ministry, Winston started a Berean Bible study that ministered to many people, continued to invest in Amarillo by serving with Conservative Patriots 4 Texas, and continued dreaming about his future with Kathy.

He was lovingly known as “Buffo” for the last twenty two years by his grandchildren-Lizzy, Brody, and Katie—who continue to adore him today. He was quick to pray for them day and night. He taught them the Gospel and how to fix their eyes on Jesus. In addition to being son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and “preacher man”, he was a friend to everyone. He saw God’s image in every person he met.

Winston was preceded in death by his grandparents DC and Dorrice Boyd, parents Wink and Virginia Curtis, and sister Bunny Floyd. He is survived by his loving wife Kathy of Amariilo, and children, Jake Curtis, Austin Curtis and Heidi Stone of DFW and Casey and Scott Merrifield of Elk City Oklahoma. His grandchildren reside in DFW as well - Elizabeth Stone, Katie Stone and David Brody Curtis. As well as countless cousins, nieces and nephews, and in laws. His personal heroes were the Lone Ranger, Winston Churchill, Dorrice Boyd, and LD Patterson.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 17, 2024, from 5-6:30 pm at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd. A service to honor his life will be Wednesday September 18, 2024, at 11 AM at the Church at Quail Creek, 801 Tascosa Rd., Amarillo, TX. Everyone is invited to attend the service as we worship the Lord Jesus Christ and honor Winston’s life.
