Richard Martin Darnell, 70, of Amarillo, TX passed peacefully on July 6, 2022.
Richard was born on March 15, 1952, in Albuquerque, NM, to Antonia Gonzales. Richard met the love of his life, Dorothy and they were married on June 7, 1969, in Amarillo, TX. They had two sons, Phillip and Eric Darnell both of Amarillo, TX.
Richard worked hard for his family his whole life and instilled that hard work into his sons. Richard enjoyed attending football games with his family and loved his Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns. The greatest joy in his life was watching his grandchildren play sports. From the oldest to the youngest, he was always present at each and every one of their events. Here recently, he loved watching his youngest grandson on the golf course. His grandchildren always tried their hardest to make “Big Dad” proud. Although only one grandkid attended UT, he still cheered for the others. For the first time, he wore an OU cap for Father’s Day and looked forward to attending this year’s Red River Shootout, where he would have Phillip and Savanna in burnt orange and Eric and Ava in crimson red.
Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Antonia Gonzales; two brothers, David and Phillip Loza; one sister, Tonya Morales; and his best friend, Harold Hernandez. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Darnell; two sons, Phillip Darnell and Eric Darnell, wife Angelica all of Amarillo; one brother, Johnny Darnell, wife Marylou of Amarillo; eight grandchildren, Cierra Cross, husband Bryce, Marissa Torres, Sable Darnell, Ryan Torres, Savanna Darnell, Ava Darnell, Pauline Darnell, and Derek Darnell; and great-granddaughter, Kinsler Jade Cross. They will truly miss their “Big Dad.” He is also survived by a lifelong friend, Dolores Hernandez, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A rosary to honor Richard will be held at 6:00 P.M., Friday, July 8, 2022, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. The funeral mass honoring Richard will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 9, 2022, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, followed by the burial at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Boulevard.
