Richard “Dick” E. Phillips – March 16, 2018

Richard “Dick” E. Phillips, 76, of Amarillo died Friday, March 16, 2018.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2018, at Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon.  Memorial services will follow at 11:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Amarillo with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Dick was born August 16, 1941, in Grand Junction, Colorado to Harold and Barbara Phillips.  Upon graduation from the University of New Mexico, Dick was immediately commissioned into the Air Force, and began serving his country.  Dick earned the rank of Captain during the Vietnam War, serving from 1964-1969.  During this time, he married Sanette Scoggin on February 26, 1966, in Waco.

Dick’s education and experience led him to a career as an engineer for the U.S. Department of Energy at Pantex from May 1969 until retirement in November 2001.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and Kiwanis Club of Amarillo South.  Dick also served his community as a driver for Meals on Wheels, provided flag service for Kiwanis Club, read to children at Opportunity School, volunteered at Kiwanis Annual Bible Reading Marathon and Kid’s Café, and he worked in the fourth grade Sunday school class at First Baptist Church.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Doug.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sanette Phillips, of the home; a daughter, Jocelyn Phillips, of Amarillo; his sister Linda McConahy and husband Larry, of Longmont, Colorado; his brother, Jim Phillips and his wife Pat, of Phoenix, Arizona; his sister-in-law, Signe Donaldson and husband Jim, of Irving, Texas; as well as six nephews and two nieces.

The family asks that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, Amarillo (www.firstamarillo.org).

    One of the kindest people I have ever known. Listened to me even though he wasn’t really interested in the subject. Didn’t matter. He cared. Also introduced me to Johnny Cash (and I hated country music then!). A good cousin that will be missed by so many. See you later Dick.
