Rareen Cora Calahan

Rareen Cora Calahan, 80, of Amarillo, TX passed away peacefully from cancer on August 17, 2023 in her home with her sister Renee at her bedside.

A small graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch Cemetery in Boys Ranch, TX, with Jeff Messer officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Amarillo.

Rareen was born April 8, 1943, in Oak Park, IL to Raymond and Corrine Huey.  She was the oldest of three sisters.  At age 9 the family relocated to southern California, where she spent her childhood and early adulthood.  After receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, she earned a spot as a TWA flight attendant, where she worked for 29 wonderful years. Upon retiring, she married TWA pilot Gerald Calahan and the couple settled in Amarillo, where they have loved the friendly people and wide vistas for the past 30 years.

Rareen was friendly and genuine, never short of warm words for neighbors, family, and friends.  Thoughtful and strong in spirit throughout life, she was a sister who loved her weekly phone calls; an aunt who remembered every birthday and holiday; a beloved visitor with her therapy dog at Bivens, Childers, and the VA hospital; a loyal pen pal; and a devoted daughter and wife.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Rachelle, and husband Gerald.  Survivors include her sister, Renee Hornbeak, of Laguna Beach, California; nieces Colette and Dana; nephews Boyd and John; and their children.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Rareen’s name to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, 600 SW 11th Ave., Amarillo, Texas 79101-3228.
