Phillip Newcomb

Phillip Newcomb, 59, of Amarillo, TX went to his Heavenly reward Monday,

August 14, 2023.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Lane Boyd officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Phillip was born June 5, 1964, in Borger, TX to Bob and Patricia Newcomb.  He graduated from Phillips High School in 1982 and moved to Amarillo in 1988.  He worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 36 years before retiring in June of 2022.

Phillip had a genuine love of people, they were his true passion, and he collected conversations with them like keepsakes, he treasured them.  He was born with an empathetic heart, full of compassion for others and was easily moved to tears when sharing his emotions.  He was quick witted and had a sense of humor that was borderline corny.  He loved writing jokes and making puns and had no problem acting ridiculous if it would garner a laugh.  Phillip loved photography and tried to find the beauty in the mundane, capturing images others might not notice.  His greatest talent was writing, a gift that God had blessed him with, he used it often and had no hesitation sharing his vulnerability while doing so, chronicling both struggles and successes.  He could easily put his thoughts into words and often said it was because his heart was the author, and he was merely a scribe.  A friend once called him the Phil-osopher because of his numerous penned quotes and so it became his tongue in cheek pseudonym.  He was a humble man, and as such could always relate to and easily talk with people.  He never met a stranger.

If you ever met Phillip, you knew he loved crazy shirts and was addicted to wearing paisley, it was his trademark.  His shirts often started conversations that ended up as friendships.  He loved traveling, especially taking cruises, and making memories with his family.  The beach was his serenity, but the mountains were his solace where he enjoyed trout fishing with his son, Connor.  His son was his greatest joy of his life, the apple of his eye, and he was so very proud of him.  He made no apologies for all the bragging he did when speaking of him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia.

Survivors include his son, Connor Newcomb, of Amarillo, TX; his father, Bob Newcomb and wife Sharon, of Commerce, TX; brothers, David Newcomb and wife Jessica, of San Antonio, TX, Michael Newcomb and wife Annette, of Ponca City, OK, and Jason Gage and wife Jessie, of Moore, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at AFSP.org.
