Penelope "Penny" Brooks Bynum

Penelope Brooks Bynum, 81, of Amarillo, Texas died October 5, 2024.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 11, 2024, at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. 

Penny was born February 10, 1943 to Nadine and Pendleton Brooks in Houston, Texas. Shortly after, her family moved to Hillsboro, Texas. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1961. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and a little sister of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. She graduated from UT in 1965 with her Education degree.

On August 26, 1966, Penny married Ben Bynum in Austin, Texas where she taught business classes at McCallum High School until her first daughter was born. In the late 1960s, Penny and her family moved to Amarillo when Ben started his political career. During this time, she also enjoyed her life as a homemaker and volunteer for the Junior League and Tri-Delta Alumnae Chapter. When her daughters began elementary school, Penny started work as a secretary at the Whittenburg Law Firm. In 1994, Ben’s work took them back to Austin where she worked as a court reporter until her retirement in 2016. Penny spent the remainder of her life surrounded by her friends and family in Amarillo. Some of her favorite things were coordinating dinners with friends, attending her grandchildren’s activities, traveling and watching Texas Longhorn football games.

She is survived by her daughters, Susan Lewallen and husband Cliff of Lubbock, Brooke McKinney and husband Page of Amarillo, and sister Melinda Massey and husband Bert of Brownwood; grandchildren Lindsey Molina and husband Ralph, Emily and Peyton Lewallen and Nelson and Charlie McKinney.
