Myrtle Emily Wallis, 101, of Amarillo died on Saturday, March 17, 2012.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. with Glen Walton, Church of Christ Minister, officiating. Burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Myrtle was born on October 2, 1910 in Jamaica, West Indies to William and Eliza Reynolds. At the age of 3, her parents, plus nine brothers and sisters, came to America. They already had relatives who had settled in Massachusetts, Missouri and Oklahoma. It took about three years for them to make it to Oklahoma where they settled in Hollis.
After finishing school, Myrtle went to work at the state hospital in Supply, Oklahoma. In 1933 she went to work at the state hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas. She began on the wards, dining room, at the switchboard and as receptionist. In 1949 she began her work as secretary to the superintendent. In most cases, she was the first person of the hospital system contacted regarding the admission of patients. A more courteous, discreet person would be hard to find. She also supervised the telephone operators and receptionists.  She moved to Amarillo in 1993 and had worked for the state of Texas for a total of forty-two years. She was a member of North Amarillo Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, J.D. Bayless, Jr. in 1978.
Survivors include a daughter, Maxine Bayless of Amarillo; two granddaughters, Tracy Atchison and husband Royce and Nan Sanders, all of Amarillo; four great grandchildren, Aaron Carthel, Mandy Carthel, Tyler Sanders and wife Jessica and Robin Sanders; four great-great grandchildren, Maverick, Daemon, Jordan and Gage.
The family suggests memorials be made to the J.D. Bayless, Jr. Scholarship fund in c/o West Texas A&M University, 2501 4th Ave., Canyon, TX 79016.
