Mrs. J. W. “Nell” Foust, 93, of Amarillo, died Thursday, October 11, 2018.
Mrs. Foust was owner and CEO of Foust Incorporated, (Whitney Russell Printers, WhitCo Stamps & Engraving and WhitCo Checks).
Nell was born in Clyde, Texas on June 16, 1925. She was one of nine children. She graduated from Clyde High School in 1944. After high school, she moved to Vernon, Texas where she worked and eventually managed a dress store.
She met J.W. Foust while she lived in Vernon. They married on January 15, 1950, and relocated to Amarillo where Nell worked for Franklin’s Mercantile. In 1953, J.W. and Nell started Foust Printing in their single car garage. In 1957, they purchased Whitney Printing Co. from Mr. L. J. Whitney. Together they built the business into a multi-million dollar operation doing business with over 350 banks in a 500-mile radius of Amarillo and producing commercial printing for large and small businesses all across the country and some international corporations. Nell continued to operate the corporation with some 55 employees after J. W. died in 2002.
Over the years J. W. and Nell have been very generous with their support to many charities in and around Amarillo including: Kids, Inc., Salvation Army, Faith City Mission, Red Cross, First Baptist Church, Girl Scouts of Texas – Oklahoma Plains, AMBUCS, Ronald McDonald House, March of Dimes, Amarillo Prayer Breakfast, Amarillo High Volleyball, Presbyterian Children’s Home, The Bridge, and Turn Center, to name a few.
In 2003, a scholarship fund was established by the WTA&MU Cager Club in honor of J. W. and Nell in the WT Athletics Department. Another scholarship fund, The J. W. & Nell Foust Memorial Scholarship, in the WTA&MU College of Business, was established in 2004. J.W. and Nell have been loyal supporters of WT for over 50 years.
In December of 2015, Nell was presented with an Honorary Doctorate Degree from WTA&MU. She is one of only five individuals to ever receive this distinguished honor in the history of the school.
Nell had a passion for gardening, and attending WT basketball games with friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W.; her parents, James Claude Harless and Claudie Pearl White; her brothers, Cecil, Clint, Nathan and J.C.; and her sisters, Irene and Mary.
She is survived by her daughters, Cathy Schermer and her husband Mike, of Farmington, AR, Gaynelle Henger and her husband Mac, of Dallas, Debbie Newman and her husband Gary, of Amarillo, her son Mike and his wife Honey, also of Amarillo; eight grandchildren, Lance Gamble of Houston, Kelly Riley and husband John, of Fayetteville, AR, Jennifer Newman, of Amarillo, Jake Foust and wife Hailee, of Amarillo, Carley Foust, of Lubbock, Kacie Foust, of Amarillo, and Anna Henger, of New York City; and three great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Betty Harless, of Amarillo and Jasmine Hoffman, of Clyde, TX.
Services will be held Friday, October 19, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
