Miriam Elmore Shi, 102, formerly of Amarillo, Texas, passed away in Englewood, Ohio, on March 6, 2024

Miriam was born January 30, 1922, in Savannah, GA, to Francis and Miriam Elmore. She graduated from Savannah High School in June 1939, as class Salutatorian. She attended Mercer University in Macon, GA, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1943. At Mercer, she was elected to several honorary societies, including Kappa Delta Epsilon and Cardinal Key. She was also president of her sorority Alpha Delta Pi. While at Mercer, she met William Melvin Shi whom she married on January 24, 1943.
Miriam and Melvin moved to Borger, Texas, where they lived for many years before moving to Amarillo, Texas. During her time in Borger, Miriam earned a Master of Arts degree from West Texas State University. She taught at Frank Phillips College and the Borger Independent School District. In Borger, she established herself as a private professional educator, a career she continued to pursue in Amarillo.
Miriam was a long-time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Amarillo. She was a docent for the Amarillo Arts Center as well as a member of several historical societies: United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Colonial Dames of the 16
th
Century.
She is preceded in death by her husband William Melvin Shi and daughter Catherine (Cathy) Price.
Miriam is survived by her daughter Miriam Pauli; and grandchildren Amy (Sean) Bardwell, Giles (Deborah) Pauli; and Angele (Mohammad) Maddah.
