Milan John Hibbs

Milan Hibbs, 93, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on October 26, 2023.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. – 6:30 P.M., Monday, October 30, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Paramount Baptist Church with Jeremy McMorris officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Milan was born on March 10, 1930, at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas to Katherine and Robert Milan Hibbs. He attended Wolflin Elementary School. When he was in junior high, the family moved to Sac City, Iowa where he attended junior and senior high.

Milan won a talent contest at the Tri-County-Fair and his prize was a radio program called “Songs by Milan Hibbs.” A lady who enjoyed listening to his singing paid his tuition to Drake University. Milan attended the university for one and a half years before joining the Air Force. The Air Force sent him to the University of Alabama for one full school term to become a stenographer. Milan was sent to Germany where his first job was secretary to the Staff Judge Advocate. This was during the Korean War. When his tour of duty was over, he was offered a job at the Pentagon if he would re-enlist, but he was ready to get home. He was in the Air Force for four years (1951-1955).

After Milan returned to the states he continued his education at Amarillo College, Texas Tech University, and West Texas State University where he earned a BBA.

Milan was employed at Texaco from 1957 to 1985 when the refinery was closed. He was hired as secretary to the plant manager and shortly after, was promoted to the shipping desk where he worked for ten years. Then, he became senior clerk at the store house where he kept a perpetual inventory and ordered supplies for the refinery.

After retiring, he worked at various jobs while Mary continued teaching until her retirement in 1991. He and Mary were married on May 24, 1974. Milan performed lead roles in several productions: Peter in the “Witness”, The “Gospel According to Scrooge” (As Scrooge). These were performed at Trinity Fellowship. At San Jacinto Baptist Church, he was John the Apostle in three Easter Productions as well as choir number and as a soloist.

Today, he calls himself The “Champene” Mall Walker – a term he coined himself.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Patricia Miller and Barbara Crocker.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Hibbs; nephew, Bobby and Dawn Peterson; special niece, Debbie Elkins and her sons, Barrett and Bryant Elkins; sister-in-law, Bonnie Austin; brothers-in-law, Doyle Quisenberry and Frances, Jim Quisenberry; special adopted family, Steve and Debbie Simpson and their children, Brianne and Jon Braudt, Ben Simpson, Morgan and Ashley Simpson, Andreanna and Kanten Hawbaker, and grandchildren, Joah Braudt, Madilynn Braudt, Gage Braudt, Kylan Braudt, Charlotte Simpson, Tyler Simpson, Eowyn Simpson, Judson Simpson, Ellie Simpson, Titus Simpson, Atticus Hawbaker and Kyte Hawbaker.
