Mary "Marty" Martin Cook

Mary “Marty” Martin Cook, 88, of Vega, TX passed away September 21, 2024.

Marty was born August 15, 1936, in Chicago, IL. At the age of 15, she entered convent for 24 years. Marty married the love of her life, Warren Cook, in 1983. She earned a B.A. in Education from Marywood College in Scranton, PA and a Master’s in Education from Cardinal College in Milwaukee, WI. Marty worked as an elementary school teacher for 45 years. She loved music and played the guitar and sang at many church services. Marty also enjoyed traveling, animals, and watching sports on TV. Upon retirement, she volunteered at a hospice in Amarillo for 11 years. She also was a caretaker of UMC for 11 years.

Marty was voted Oldham County Woman of the Year in 2013. She devoted her life to helping the elderly and ill compromised individuals in the Vega area. Marty and Warren attended Vega Methodist Church for many years, and she later joined her friends in attending Vega Baptist Church.

Thank you to her special Vega lady friends who became referred to as the “Golden Girls” who brought her much enjoyment and fun. Thanks also to Lelia Groneman who took care of Marty for the last few months.

She is preceded in death by her husband Warren Cook; sister, Frances Forys; and brother, Peter Periard.

Marty is survived by her sister, Annette Ruckel of Oklahoma City, OK; nephews, Father Tim Ruckel and Paul Ruckel of Oklahoma City, OK; Bryce and Jo Anne Cook and family, and Jason and Charlotte Cook and family, all of Vega; and stepsons, Doug Cook and family, and Darrell Cook and family.

Viewing will be from 12-6:00 PM, with family receiving friends from 5-6:00 PM, Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Boxwell Brothers at Vega. Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 26, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Vega with Pastor Brian Hevrin as officiant. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Vega. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers at Vega. 

The family suggests memorials to First Baptist Church in Vega; or to Memorial Park Cemetery at Vega.
