Luther Otis Foster, Jr., was born in Montrose, MD on July 14, 1927 to Luther Otis Foster Sr. and Nettie Eudora Claig. He graduated from Warren County High School in 1947, and served in the US Army at Ft. Bragg. NC beginning in August 1945 and was honorably discharged in November 1946.
Luther married Betty Jo Griffin at First Assembly of God Church in Amarillo, Texas on April 17, 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Bessie Rankin of New Oxford, PA, Virginia Williamson of Front Royal, VA and a brother Donald Foster of Gaithersburg, MD. He was also predeceased by his sons Luther Otis (Butch) Foster III and Ronald Dean Foster both of San Antonio, Texas as well as a grandson, Luther Otis (Bill) Foster IV of Lake Hills, Texas. Luther is survived by his wife, Betty and they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary just 10 days before his death. Also surviving are 2 brothers, Robert Foster of Plano, Texas and Ralph Foster of San Antonio, Texas. One son, Gary Foster and wife Marsha of Berryville, VA survives and four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Warren County high school, Luther went on to Southwestern Assemblies of God University (now Nelson University) where he earned both Bachelor of Theology and Bachelor of Science degrees. Luther pastored Assembly of God churches in Forreston, Quitaque, and Paducah, Texas, then pioneered a church in Powhatan, Virginia which is still thriving.
Luther also taught elementary and high school in Maryland and Virginia as well as Behind the Wheel Driver Education for 17 years.
After retirement, Luther and wife Betty pioneered a church in Powhatan, VA. They later moved to Amarillo and then began traveling throughout the US in a motorhome. They joined the RV Ministry of the Assemblies of God, assisting in building churches and working in the AG headquarters in Springfield, MO as coordinator – sending RV Volunteers to projects needing their specific skills..They settled in San Antonio for many years, ultimately returning back to Virginia living with son, Gary and then to Assisted Living in Winchester, VA where he was relieved of his mortal body on April 27, 2024 – ten days after he and Betty celebrated 75 years of marriage.
Services will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, May 4, 2024, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Reverend Billy Nickell, of First Assembly of God Church, officiating. Buril will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
