Leslie “Les” Douglas Lovvorn, 79, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on August 23, 2024.
Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 27, 2024, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Mike Leonard officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Les was born in Stamford, Texas on February 13, 1945, to Lou Jean (McAllister) and James Douglas Lovvorn. His dad had to go to war when Les was only 2 weeks old. He grew up in Corinth Community near Stamford and helped his dad with the farm. Even as a young child, he was an avid Stamford Bulldog fan and was an outstanding defensive cornerback at Stamford High as well as being elected football captain. After high school graduation in 1963, he later received his undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University after which he began graduate school studies in finance and banking. But with the Vietnam war calling, rather than being drafted, Leslie chose to join the Navy through Officers Candidate school. In September of 1970, as cargo officer, he was assigned to the supply ship, the USS Vega (AF-59), home-ported in San Francisco, and eventually supplied other ships in the South China Sea and the coast of Vietnam. After a seven-month tour of duty, he returned to the United States. Eventually after his release from the Navy, he soon found his life's work with Production Credit Association, later Capital Farm Credit, first serving six years as Loan Officer in Perryton, then serving the remainder of his forty-year career in Canadian: ultimately as Senior Vice President and Branch Manager. Quote from Les, "The people I've gotten to know and work with, I consider the salt of the earth and have enjoyed getting to work with and know and become friends with them."
Les made his profession of faith at approximately 9 years of age during a Corinth Baptist Church revival, led by an Evangelist. He served as the pianist at Corinth Baptist for several years.
Les had a lifelong devotion to football, particularly Canadian and Texas Tech’s teams. He was even a timekeeper for Canadian for several years.
Les married Jamie Claudette Duncan on September 19, 1986, in Amarillo, TX.
Les was a member of the Lions Club for 50+years, a past member of the Chamber of Commerce of both Perryton and Canadian, member of the Baptist Church for over 50 years then current member of the Presbyterian Church of Canadian.
Les was a very devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather to 6 grandkids.
He was preceded in death by both parents.
He is survived by his wife, Jamie Lovvorn; children, Amy Holland (Brian) of Gainesville, FL, Scott Lovvorn (Jennifer) of Richlands, NC, Courtney Love (Brian) of Amarillo, TX, Celeste Lovvorn of Seattle, WA, and Derek Lovvorn of San Angelo, TX; 6 grandkids, Zachary, Caleb, and Trevor Lovvorn of Richlands, NC, and Jase, Emily, and Molly Love of Amarillo, TX; brother, Marc (Diane) Lovvorn of Stamford, TX; sisters, Karen Nauert of Stamford, TX, and Janet Duncan of Amarillo, TX; brother-in-law, Dr. David Duncan, of Amarillo, TX; father and mother-in-law, Arnie and Jeanette Duncan, of Amarillo, TX; nieces, Marci Acheson (Kirk), and Mandi Whittelsey (Brad); nephews, Logan Nauert, Blake Nauert, and Austin (Cassy) Duncan; and several very close cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lion’s Club (639) in Canadian, Texas (2nd & Main Street, Canadian, TX), or the Amarillo’s Children Home 3400 S. Bowie, Amarillo, Texas).
