Larry Gene Bourland

March 8, 1951 – February 21, 2025

Larry Gene Bourland, 73, of Amarillo, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on February 22, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Larry was a man who lived life with energy, kindness, and an unstoppable spirit.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at South Georgia Baptist Church, 5209 South Georgia St., Amarillo, TX with Pastor Mike Martin officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

A Life of Service and Adventure

Larry was born in Amarillo on March 8, 1951, to Eugene and Retha Bourland and grew up in the heart of the Texas Panhandle. A proud graduate of Amarillo High School’s Class of 1969, he answered the call to serve his country soon after, enlisting in the United States Army. As a Track Vehicle Mechanic in Korea, he carried out his duty with dedication, earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the designation of Sharpshooter (Rifle)—a testament to his skill and discipline.

After his honorable service, Larry returned home and built a life filled with love and adventure. On March 17, 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Teresa Ashworth, beginning a beautiful journey of nearly 52 years of marriage. Together, they raised four children, creating a home filled with laughter, faith, and a love for the outdoors.

A Man Who Kept Moving

Throughout his life, Larry worked hard and provided for his family with a strong work ethic. He spent time with Tri-State Fence Company, Amarillo Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Affiliated Foods, and Gulf Coast Trucking. Whether working long hours on the road as a truck driver or sharing a warm smile while ringing the bell for The Salvation Army, Larry found joy in meeting people and making them feel seen and valued.

His passion for nature and adventure was evident in his love for camping in the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico, fishing, hiking to the Lighthouse in Palo Duro Canyon, and tending to his flower garden. Larry was also a devoted collector of toy cars and robots, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for nostalgia and the simple joys in life.

Even when his body began to slow down, Larry’s adventurous spirit refused to be confined. Locals in Amarillo could often spot him cruising the streets in his electric scooter—a familiar, friendly presence who just couldn’t be held down. His joy for life was infectious, and his time with the “Old Geezer’s” group at South Georgia Baptist Church was something he truly cherished.

A Legacy of Love

Larry is now reunited in heaven with his parents, Eugene and Retha Bourland; his beloved son, Anthony Bourland; and his nephew, Jeremy Peace. Though he will be deeply missed, his love and laughter live on through those he leaves behind:

His beloved wife, Teresa Bourland, who faithfully walked beside him in life and love.

His daughter, Amanda Bourland, who lovingly cared for him at home.

His son, Christopher Bourland and wife, Christie, of Weaver, Alabama, along with his treasured granddaughter, Bella.

His daughter, Celeste Powell and husband, Bobby, of Fremont, Nebraska.

His sister, Glenda Tunnel, of Dublin, TX.

His nephew, Tim Peace and niece, Leah Kennedy.

A host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.

A special thanks is extended to Evelyn with Gentiva Hospice of Amarillo, whose compassionate care was a gift during Larry’s final days.

Larry Bourland was a man who embraced life fully, loved deeply, and left behind a legacy of strength, faith, and an unbreakable spirit. His journey on earth may have ended, but his story will continue through the countless lives he touched.

A man is not measured by how he dies but by how he lived. Larry lived. He worked, he loved, he laughed, he moved. And now, he rests.

The road stretches on. The mountains wait. The wind keeps blowing.
