Ken Morrison, 83, of Amarillo, TX passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2022 after a battle with Alzheimer’s.
Memorial services will be in his beloved Cuchara, CO on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at 10:00 A.M., at The Cuchara Chapel. A reception will follow at the REC Hall.
Ken was born July 9, 1938 in Pampa, TX to Johnny and Adele Morrison. He married Sharon Whitfield on December 18, 1965. They lived in Dumas for most of the 57 years they were married and raised two children, Brad and Kelly, there.
Ken graduated from Texas Tech with his BBA in 1961 where he was in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and then began a career best known for either his years as President at North Plains Savings and Loan or his second career, teacher at Dumas High School. Prior to these two adventures he worked for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the City of Dumas, along with teaching classes for Amarillo College throughout the years. Ken also earned his licensure as a real estate broker, though he never pursued that as a career.
Ken and Sharon were members of the First United Methodist Church of Dumas where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served on numerous committees (chairman of the Administrative Board, chairman of the Finance Committee, Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, chairman of the Special Gifts and Wills Committee). Upon moving to Amarillo in 2000, Ken and Sharon joined the Polk Street United Methodist Church. Ken served the community of Dumas through his participation and leadership in many organizations including Lions Club (Treasurer, Vice President, President), Chamber of Commerce (Director), YMCA (Treasurer Director), United Way (Director), Dumas Industrial Foundations (Director), Opportunity Plan (Chairman), Panhandle Plains Higher Education Board, and Dumas ISD Board of Trustees. He also served within his profession for the Texas Savings and Loan League (Director) and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (ADVISE Committee). Ken also served the Cuchara Valley through his volunteering with the Cuchara Association (Director and Treasurer) and the Cuchara Valley Chapel (Trustee).
Once Ken retired, he loved playing tennis with his wonderful group of friends in Cuchara in the mornings followed many days by fishing in the afternoon. He also loved the beach, and Ken and Sharon spent many years splitting time between residences in Amarillo, Cuchara and South Padre Island. His love for travel gave rise to many fun trips around the world with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and nephew, Bobby Adair.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of the home, his son, Brad Morrison and wife Vickie, and daughter Kelly Morrison, all of Amarillo; his sister, Joan Adair, of Canyon, TX, his niece Jo Stroebel of Dumas, TX, and his nephew, Kerry Adair and wife Anita of Canyon, TX along with their respective families.
