Karen Vaeth Geyer – October 23, 2017

Karen Vaeth Geyer of Amarillo, Texas, passed from this life into the next on October 23, 2017. Heaven received an angel who can cook, bake, make fabulous wreaths (the gates of heaven will be seasonally decorated), and garden. Babies will be loved and laundry done.
Karen was born on March 3, 1950 in Rochester, NY. Karen was the first of nine children of Joseph J. and Monica McDonald Vaeth, as well as being the oldest grandchild of her paternal grandparents. She grew up in a large and loving family; attended Our Lady of Mercy High School and Maria Regina College. Karen raised her three precious children in Aurora, Colorado, where she ran a private, home-based child care service. Her day care children were loved, fed hot breakfasts and hot lunches, and thrived under a schedule of learning and fun, benefiting from her education and experience in child development. But mostly they flourished with her love. Upon her retirement, Karen moved to Amarillo, TX, where she became the in-house matriarch of the Hughes family, while simultaneously acting as mother-extraordinaire, super grandmother and head cheerleader for her children and grandchildren in Colorado and Kansas. Karen was known for her loving kindness, sweetness, generosity and friendliness; her extraordinary baking and cooking skills; and her unlimited enthusiasm for the Denver Broncos. She loved Halloween, Star Trek, Star Wars, the Beatles, visiting with the walking girls and spoiling her grandchildren.
Karen is survived by her heart-broken children and grandchildren: Harold, wife Ticey and their children Kennedy and Hudson, of Andover, KS; Heather, of Golden, CO.; Ashley Hughes, husband Larry and their children, Madison and Brad, of Amarillo, TX. She will be deeply missed by her siblings and their families: Colleen Schiefen (NY), Joseph T. Vaeth and wife Lenora (CA); Anne Marie Lizdas and husband Peter (CA); Mary Halbig and husband Waldemar (Germany); Patty Maas and husband Bill (VA); Michael Vaeth and wife Michelle (NC); Monica Misey and husband Rob (WI). Karen was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed keeping track of her many, many aunts, uncles and cousins around the globe. Karen was known as “GMom” to many of the friends of her children and grandchildren, neighbors and coworkers, who share their sorrow. Karen was predeceased by her husband, Stan Daniels; her mother and father, Monica McDonald and Joseph J. Vaeth; and her siblings John F. Vaeth, Peter Vaeth and Agnes Vaeth.
Karen did not want a traditional funeral but loved a party. On November 18, 2017, the family will gather to remember Karen. If you wish to join the family on that day, please contact the family by email at Karengmom3@gmail.com.
Many people have asked what they can do, if they can make a contribution or send flowers. Your love and support is appreciated. The family suggests that contributions may be made in Karen’s memory to the Amarillo Area Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) on line through their website at http://www.amarillocasa.org/give-support or by mail to Amarillo Area CASA, P.O. Box 691, Amarillo, TX 79105-0691.

    Ashley, Larry, and family:
I am so sorry for your loss. Although, I only knew Karen for a short time, she quickly became one of my favorite people. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. God bless you!

Karen was an awesome Treasurer for our child care association for over 10 years. We always enjoyed her sense of humor and sharp mind. She has been missed since she moved away. I will miss watching her Gmom comments from afar. So very sorry for the loss to your family.

Sorry to hear cousin Karen has passed away. One request I have is that Karen always sent me the Vaeth Directory. If someone takes over please remember me. Karen has left many memories to her children and grandchildren and they will pass them along and speak about them. They especially will come in hand as the holidays approach. Prayers to all.
Those we love don’t go away
They walk beside us every day
    Unseen Unheard but always near
Still loved Still missed and very near

I was a classmate of Karen’s at Mercy. I have fond memories of her and also enjoyed following her on Facebook. She loved her family and I am sure you are all devastated at her sudden departure. May you be comforted by your sweet memories. Much love to you all.

Karen was my “oldest” first cousin (on the Vaeth side). I am so sad to hear of her passing and I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to all of her family. This is a wonderful obituary celebrating Karen and her gifts to all of us. God bless you all during this sad time and may Karen Rest In Peace.
