Mathews, 92, of Claude, TX died Sunday, July 9, 2023.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 14, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. in Amarillo, TX.
Joy was a descendant of a Texas Panhandle pioneer ranching family. She was born October 16, 1930, to Horace and Esther Baker on the family ranch at the edge of the Palo Duro Canyon in Armstrong County. She married Kenneth Mathews in 1950, and they moved to the ranch where they worked together for 60 years. She loved the land and instilled that love for the land in her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Westcliff Bible Church, and a member of Unity Study Club in Claude 40 plus years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her son, Stanley Baker Mathews; her brother, Dr. Vincent Baker; and her parents.
Joy is survived by son, Steve Mathews, and wife, Martha, of Claude, TX; daughter, Melody Wilson, and husband, Ross, of Canyon, TX. Surviving grandchildren include Blair Mathews and wife, Jenifer, of Richardson; Becca Moehrig and husband, Matt, of Boerne, TX; Marla Burnes and husband, Bob, of Victoria, TX; Monty Mathews of Clarksville, TN; Heath Wilson of Canyon, TX; and Shawna Strain and husband, Dylan, of College Grove, TN. Joy is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Zoleta Cash; a nephew, Terrill Cash; and a niece, Camille Ousley.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Armstrong County Museum or the Claude Volunteer Fire Department.
