Jose Ramon Gonzales, 89, of Amarillo, TX passed away April 9, 2024.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 12, 2024 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Interment will follow in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Joe’s life journey began in Rincon, N.M., where he was born to Jose P. Gonzales and Carlota Costales Gonzales on October 5, 1934. In 1948, the family moved to Las Cruces, N.M where he graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1953.
He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably for four years and earned the rank of Petty Officer. After his military service, he married Eva Pena in 1958. In 1961, he enrolled at New Mexico State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1964. He went on to obtain his Professional Engineering License in New Mexico in 1970 and Texas in 1976.
Joe began his engineering career with Southwestern Public Service in Roswell, New Mexico in 1964 and transferred to the Amarillo headquarters in 1975. He retired after 32 years of service as the Principle Engineer of Distribution and Meter Standards. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers where he served as the President of the S.E. Chapter as well as the State Director and a member of the Institute of Electronic & Electrical Engineers.
Joe was an avid golfer and won the Amarillo Men’s Coors Light City Championship three times in his respective flight class. The highlight of his golfing career was being able to play at the Southwestern Bell Colonial Pro-Am with professional golfer Robert Gamez. He also made a “hole in one” twice during his years of playing. He played golf regularly until January of 2024.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Jose P. And Carlota Gonzales, sisters Rosa Lee Chavez and Dora Garcia, and a brother, Ernie Gonzales.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eva, a daughter Sandra (Danny) Knight, of Amarillo, sons Steven (lan) Gonzales, and Michael (Bonnie) Gonzales of Austin, and a granddaughter, Hayley Knight of Irving, a brother Robert Gonzales of Santa Fe, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
