Johnny Morris Wood Sr. , 79, of Amarillo, TX passed away peacefully at his home on June 29, 2023.
Services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, July 8, 2023, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. A private Burial will be held at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
Johnny was born in Bristol, Virginia on December 31, 1943, to Zada Francis Clayton and James Oliver Wood III. He lived in Tennessee until the age of thirteen and then his family moved to Amarillo, Texas. He attended and graduated from Palo Duro High School. Throughout his life he worked for the Tottle House as a short order cook and commissary chef, Cookbook Bakery, Cooper and Woodruff and J Lee Milligan as a diesel mechanic, Lone Star Chrysler as the service manager, and Excel Machinery in logistics where he retired from.
He was a Godly man who loved the Lord and singing to the Lord. He sang in “The Crusaders” quartet for 12 years, led music and was a deacon at Eastridge Baptist Church, and led music at Olsen Park Baptist Church and South Georgia Baptist Church.
Johnny loved spending time with his wife, kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. He also loved going to Tennessee to spend time with his family.
Johnny is preceded in death by, his parents Jim & Zada Wood of Bristol, TN; brother Ray Wood of Pasadena, MD; Sister Alene Wright of Oxnard, CA.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dianna Wood of Amarillo; four children, daughter, Tammy Martin of Amarillo, son, Johnny Wood, Jr of Amarillo, son Kenneth Wood and wife Trina of Amarillo, and son, James Wood of Amarillo; eleven grandchildren, Chrissye Martin of Amarillo, Geary Martin, Jr and wife Renee of Amarillo, Justin Martin and wife Holly of Vega, Johnny Wood, III and wife Jodi of Amarillo, William Wood and wife Kelly of Kennesaw, GA, Thomas Wood of Amarillo, Elizabeth Wood of Amarillo, Seth Wood of Amarillo, Nathan Wood of Amarillo, Noah Wood of Amarillo and Hannah Wood of Amarillo; six great-grandchildren, Raegan Martin of Vega, Emersyn Martin of Vega, Charley Martin of Amarillo, Jonah Wood of Amarillo, Sarah Wood of Amarillo, Luke Wood of Kennesaw, GA and 3 more great-grandchildren on the way. Two sisters, Betty Cross of Rural Retreat, VA, and Cleta Pontello of Snow Hill, MD, and many nieces and nephews and other family members.
