John Ira Sawyers passed away November 9, 2024. He lived an incredibly healthy and active life right up to the end.
Born in Amarillo on February 17, 1926, the son of Wayne and Cathleen Sawyers also born in Amarillo.
After serving in World War II in the Army Air Force, he returned home and married Mary Wells of Amarillo with whom he had 50 wonderful years. He was a devoted family man. They had four children John W. Sawyers, Joe W. Sawyers (wife Tanya), Mary Van Ness (husband Peter), and Susan Alice Sawyers. He has one grandchild, John C. Sawyers (wife Vanessa), and three great granddaughters, Clara, Hazel, and Lila.
After being a general Contractor in Amarillo and the surrounding areas for several years, in the 70’s he joined Henry C. Beck Construction Company as a project manager. Among his many projects all over the U. S. was the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. He lived a rich life and was fortunate enough to have a lifelong love of horses. He enjoyed ranching and later breeding Rocky Mountain Horses.
