John was born on September 5, 1922, in Goose Creek, Texas, and spent his youth in surrounding towns in east Texas. He told stories of attending school in a one- room school house and spending time with his two sisters at Granny Brown’s house.
John met his precious wife Virginia on a blind date. During his three tours of duty with the Army in World War II, he carried talismans of love and faith in his pocket – a picture of Virginia and a Bible. They were married when he returned from service. That war torn bible held a place of prominence in their home, and a picture of Virginia remained in his billfold. They were blessed with 66 years of love and laughter.
John was a talented man who began his 38 year career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company by climbing poles, and later created the Builders Architect department.  He had many sideline occupations, included ownership of a gas station, John’s Coffee Shop at the Herring Plaza, and the Fleet Garage, as well farming and ranching.  His hobbies included playing cards and dominos, telling jokes, hunting with his grandson, and fishing with his grandchildren.  Many precious memories were made while fishing at Baylor Lake with his children and grandchildren.
His love for his country was only surpassed by the love for family.
He was predeceased by the love of his life and his wife, Virginia Hare; daughter, Tana Gay Hare; brother, Jim Porter; sister, Bertie Gray; stepfather, O.E. Porter; and mother, Ollie Porter.
John was proud of, and is survived by, his two daughters, Sherre House, of Woodward, Okla., and Shanon Frye and husband John of Tulia. He is also survived by his sister, Lucille McCollum and husband Gilbert of Livingston; his loving grandchildren, Toni Thomas and husband Mark, Teri Carrell and husband Tracy, Chad Fincher and wife Lindsay; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time spent with him.
