John Curtis Coon
John Curtis Coon, age 81 died peacefully in his home in Amarillo, TX on
March 1, 2023.
John was born in Dalhart and raised on the family ranch south of Dumas. In his early 20’s, John went on to work in the family cattle business in the Oklahoma Panhandle.
John was a devoted volunteer at Amarillo’s local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous. He shared his quick wit and his faith in Christ as a sponsor of those struggling with addiction. John was an avid outdoorsman from an early age and a student and collector of Southwest artifacts. A lesson on Native American and cowboy culture was a common topic when visiting with John.
John is survived by his wife of 35 years Carole Gattis Coon, his daughters Catherine of Norman Oklahoma, Shannon of Houston Texas, his sons Brent of Sheridan Wyoming, Ralph ‘Wil’ of Selina Texas, his stepdaughters Anya of Austin, Texas, Kristin of Waitsburg, Washington, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
A private family burial will take place at Coon Ranch. In lieu of flowers, donations to Gentiva Hospice, Amarillo in Johns name would be greatly appreciated.
