Joel Holmes Lummus

Joel Holmes Lummus, of Amarillo, TX, died Friday, September 9, 2022.

Joel was born to Charles and Geneva Lummus on December 17, 1935, in Shamrock, TX.  In 1943, the family moved to Dumas, TX and in 1958, Joel married Mary Helen Troutman.  They proudly spent the next sixty-four years together attending church, going to school, working, raising a family, golfing, and being involved in the lives of their four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Joel was a firm believer in Jesus Christ, and an exemplary husband, father, and friend.  Joel played football and ran track at TCU, and later became a member of the TCU Letterman’s Club.  He also was a member of the Dumas Demon Football Wall of Honor.  After college, Joel worked for fourteen years selling irrigation pipe and sprinklers for Gifford Hill.  In 1976, he went on to own a Montgomery Ward catalog and clothing store with Mary Helen in Dumas, called the Four L’s.

Joel and Mary spent countless days enjoying their time together on the golf course and loved watching TCU football with friends and family.  He was a genuine, top-notch man yet also ornery to the core.  He was well respected by his family and adored by his grandchildren.  You can’t have a ‘Joe’ without a ‘Meemee’.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Rusty Lummus, and a great-grandson, William Tate.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Helen; a daughter, Karen Coleman and husband Bill; a son, Russ Lummus and wife Della; grandchildren, Landon Coleman and wife Brooke, Lindsey Tate and husband Chase, Wesley Lummus, Jamie Lummus; great-grandchildren (who called him ‘Joe’) Emma, Noelle, Amelia and Clayton Coleman, Elin, Maddox and Tilden Tate, and Cash Greer; and a brother Mac Lummus.

Family visitation will be from 5:00-6:30 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the funeral home.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 16, 2022, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd.  Burial will be at Llano Cemetery.
