It is with deep sorrow and profound gratitude for his life that we announce the passing of E. Jay O’Keefe who left this world peacefully on November 8th, at the age of 96. He joins his father, Earl, mother, Saxche, and sisters Kitty and Nanne for a reunion in Heaven.
Born February 6, 1928, in Pampa, Texas, Jay lived a life of exceptional achievement, deep faith, and unwavering love for his family and friends. He was the beloved husband of Mary Ann (Gahn) O’Keefe, with whom he shared a devoted marriage of 66 years. Their bond was a testament to enduring commitment and partnership. Mary Ann was by his side when he left this earth to meet his Almighty Maker.
Jay, lovingly known as J-Dad, was the father of two daughters, Elizabeth O’Keefe Thompson (Steve), and April O’Keefe Wheeler (Karl). He is also survived by his five cherished grandchildren: Karla Hanson (Chris), Brandon Wheeler (Jennifer), Sarah Thompson (Alfredo), Leah Guias (Cristi) and Jordan Thompson. He was also able to enjoy his two great granddaughters the last 13 years, Lena Guias, 13 yrs., and Frankie Hanson, 12 yrs.
A graduate of Amarillo College, Jay went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in actuarial science from the University of Michigan. His education was complemented by his service in the U.S. Air Force, where he served his country with honor. Jay was part of a professional bowling team in his 20’s and early 30’s prior starting a family and his career.
Professionally, Jay had a distinguished career in the insurance industry, spending many years with the Southwestern Insurance Company (SIC) and Western National Life Insurance Company (now AIG), ultimately retiring in 1986 as the President of Western National Life Insurance Company. His leadership was characterized by integrity, diligence, and wisdom.
Beyond his career, Jay was a spiritual mentor, itinerate minister and financial counselor to countless individuals, offering guidance, wisdom, and support rooted in his strong Christian faith. He was a long-time member and elder at Westcliffe Bible Church and served on the board of directors for Amarillo College. He believed deeply in the power of giving to others and took great joy in helping people navigate life’s challenges and financial decisions. His kindness, generosity, and commitment to God were at the heart of everything he did. In his leisure time, he enjoyed daily swimming at the YMCA, water skiing, snow skiing and playing the piano.
His legacy will live on in the memories of his humor, his guidance, and the Christian example he set for all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held at Llano Cemetery, 10:00 a.m., November 15th followed by a Celebration of Life at Westcliff Bible Church, 11:00 a.m., November 15th. In lieu of flowers, you are welcome to give a donation to Westcliffe Bible Church in Amarillo, Texas.
