Imogene Sherley Cearley

Imogene Sherley Cearley, 87, of Amarillo, TX passed away at her home on July 19, 2023.

Graveside Service is planned for 11:30 am, Friday, July 21, 2023, at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are made by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Imogene Sherley was born in Stigler, OK on November 11, 1935, to Thomas Alonzo and Inez Sherley.

Most of her childhood was spent in Concord, CA.  In March, 1945, at her mother’s insistence, she reluctantly went to Sunday School.  When she returned home, a little later than expected, she had a big smile all over her face. When her mother asked her what happened, Imogene replied “I was saved.”  Her mother said “What?”, then Imogene came over and put her arms around her mother and said “I was saved”, and she was still smiling. Her mother then asked her if she felt she had a friend in Jesus?  She said, “yes”, and her mother reminded her that she could always trust in Jesus.

In her final years of high school, her family moved to Friona, TX, where she graduated from Friona High.  One month later on June 21, 1953, she married the most wonderful man, Waylain Neal Cearley.  She was a faithful and loving wife and mother as she moved with her Marine or waited for him to return from many military deployments. After his retirement from the Marine Corps, Imogene and Neal returned to Amarillo in 1974 to continue their life together.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo and Inez Sherley; her son, Donald W. Cearley: and her husband, Neal Cearley.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Darlene Cearley of Amarillo, TX and Deborah Myers of Wake Forest, NC; 4 grandchildren: Wayne Cearley and wife Jessica of Amarillo, TX; Jason Myers and wife Christina of Franklinton, NC; Sherilyn Cearley of Amarillo, TX; Jill Langlois and husband Mack of Wake Forest, NC;
