Helen Lou (Watson) Spencer

Lou Spencer went to join her Lord and Savior in Heaven on March 17, 2023, and she rejoiced in the journey.  Lou was born on July 28, 1927, in Beaumont, Texas to A. R. “

Lon

” Watson and Lois Bishop Watson.  She grew up in Plainview, Texas, enjoyed summers at Camp Waldemar and graduated from Plainview High School.  Lou attended Christian College in Columbia Missouri and the University of Texas in Austin where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority.  She taught school in Crystal City, Dumas, and substitute taught in Amarillo, Texas.

On August 29, 1950, Lou married William L. “

Bill

” Spencer. They lived all 51 years of their marriage in Amarillo.  Lou was a wonderful wife and mother to her two sons Rick and Steve.  She loved skiing at their home in Taos New Mexico and skied well into her 70’s.  When Bill was struck by dementia Lou lovingly cared for him the remainder of his life.  After he was gone, she enjoyed traveling all over the world with her friends.

Her friends would tell anyone that first and foremost, Lou was a Christian and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo where she taught a Sunday School class of young women.  Many of those women became her dear friends and her Church family was a very important throughout her life.  The depth of her faith was unmatched, and she was assured of her life after death.  During her last illness her obvious faith ministered to all around her.  Lou was also very active in the Women’s Missionary Union and a Trustee of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview and a member of the AN chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization.

For the last 16 years Lou enjoyed her apartment at the Continental where she had many friends.  The social interaction, bridge games, dominos, and worship services there enriched her later years.

Lou was predeceased by her grandmother, Jenny Lou Whitlock Bishop, parents, Lois and Lon, husband, Bill and her sister, Ann Glidden, and brother-in-law Jack of Houston. Lou is survived by her sons, Rick Spencer and wife Tammy of Houston, Steve Spencer of Dallas, foster son Darryl Pratt and wife Melissa of Waco. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Anthony and William Spencer of Dallas, their mother Natasha Spencer of Dallas, Steve and wife Emily Spencer of Houston and favorite granddaughter, Elizabeth Brinkley and husband Jessy of Fort Worth and their mother Connie Spencer of Houston, and step-granddaughter, Shelby Kolmeier. Lou has two great-grandchildren, Shepherd and Poppy Spencer of Houston, nephew John Glidden of Houston, niece Genevieve Davis and great-

nieces

Marley and Lindsey Davis all of Dallas. All will fondly remember “Grandmother”. Her extended families at the First Baptist Church Amarillo and the Continental Retirement Center also survive and will fondly remember her.

Visitation will be from 6 – 7 P.M., Friday, March 24, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers funeral home.  Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 25, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Amarillo with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating.
