Harry Lee Blackshear

Harry Blackshear, age 78 of Amarillo, TX formerly Happy, TX, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024 in Amarillo, TX.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Happy Community Center in Happy, Texas with Pastor Rick Bloodworth officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, TX.

Harry was born August 26, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri to Willie C. Blackshear and Eva Blackshear. He moved with his parents at a young age to Dumas, TX where he attended elementary and junior high schools.  His mother died in 1956 and after his father remarried in 1959 the family moved to Amarillo, TX where he attended Palo Duro High School graduating in 1963.

Harry was a true cowboy at heart and lived the simple cowboy life.  He worked for Wrangler Feedyard for 30 years retiring in 2015.  After retiring from Wrangler he worked at Walmart in Canyon as a greeter where he made many new friends.  Harry never met a stranger and had a gift of gab and was known to tell a yarn or two.  He enjoyed his daily visits to the post office and the bank in Happy where he had a great friendship with the ladies who worked at both places.  During his kids school years he was involved in their 4H projects as well as helping at stock shows and was always involved in any rodeo events happening at the Happy Arena. Harry loved watching the Rodeo channel and made a few trips to the National Finals in Las Vegas.  He enjoyed eating out and he and his sister always had a friendly banter over who was going to pay (him usually winning).  He also enjoyed going to garage sales.  He enjoyed attending the rodeo events his sons and grandson participated in.    He was an active member of the Happy community and served as a volunteer on the Happy Fire Department.

Harry was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2020 and he became a resident of Ussery Roan-TSVH in Amarillo, TX in December 2020.  The family would like to thank the entire staff for the love and care given to Harry the past 3 years.  The residents in the memory unit became our second family and we developed some beautiful friendships and memories.  Harry was affectionately known as “Cowboy” by the staff and residents.

Harry was preceded in death by his father “Blackie”, his mother Eva and his stepmother Winnie and a brother William.

Harry is survived by his daughter Kari Blackshear; his two sons Harry “Cotton” Blackshear, Jr., and Kree Kelley and his wife Tanya; his grandchildren McKenzi, McKynna, Raylee and Slade; his sister Martha Morton and her husband Kelly; his niece Tami and nephew Neil and his wife Becky and a host of friends.
