Gloria "Glo" Jean Cushenberry

June 20, 1941 — November 13, 2024

Gloria “Glo” Jean Cushenberry, 83, of Amarillo, TX was called home to her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on December 12, 2024, officiated by Pastor Garvin McCarrell at Boxwell Brothers chapel at 2800 Paramount Blvd. in Amarillo.

Gloria was born on June 20, 1941, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, to Orval and Geneva Reynolds. She graduated from Palo Duro High School, attended Amarillo College, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from West Texas State University. During her school years, she was recognized as a talented athlete, excelling in bowling, golf, softball and tennis, where she was voted the most dedicated and valuable tennis player.

Gloria had a lifelong career in teaching and coaching, working at Hereford High School, Horace Mann Junior High School, Palo Duro High School, and Richard Milburn Academy. Additionally, she was highly respected as an educator and golf coach throughout her career and found time to coach for Kids Inc. Gloria was also a well-loved landlord throughout Amarillo. You may have even seen her selling tickets for football games at Dick Bivins Stadium throughout the decades. For her life’s accomplishments, Glo was inducted into the Palo Duro High School Don Hall of Fame in 1989.

In her personal life, Gloria was a member of Trinity Fellowship Church, where she was actively involved in youth leadership programs early on and also was lovingly devoted to her life group. Over a span of 15 years, she opened her home to over 30 at risk teenagers, many of whom came at the request of teachers, counselors, and church members. Some arrived with only the clothes on their backs. Under her guidance, support, love, and protection, their grades improved, and all who stayed in her home graduated from high school. Some lived with her for just a day, while others stayed for many years. Her home was a safe haven for young people, and Gloria was grateful for the opportunity, with God’s help, to make a difference in their lives.

Gloria was preceded in death by her mom and dad, Orval and Geneva Reynolds.

She is survived by her son, Cy Cushenberry of Colorado. Also, she is survived by her two sisters, Pam Pitt of Amarillo and her husband David, as well as Debby McCarley of Weatherford, Texas. She had four nephews and two nieces: Deven Pitt (Kristin) of Ft. Worth, Ryan McCarley (Molly), Josh McCarley (Judy), and Seth McCarley, all of Weatherford as well as Amber McElreath (Jimmy) of Frisco and Bekah Alexander (Clayton) of Ft. Worth and special friend, Julie Taylor. She is survived by 11 grand nieces and nephews. Glo never missed calling anyone on their birthday and wishing them a blessed day!

In lieu of flowers or donations, it would have been Glo’s greatest joy for you to share Jesus with someone or at the very least, simply be kind to one other person today.
