Glenda Ivaugn Stevens McKinley, 86, passed peacefully from this world on Thursday, January 18, 2024. A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Stephen Church on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd..
Glenda was the first child to Glenn Stevens and Helen Ray Stevens, born in October 1937 at the home of her grandparents Haven and Callie Stevens near Hugoton, Kansas. Her family lived her early years on her father’s farm before moving to a house “in town”. She graduated from Hooker High School in Oklahoma and later attended Amarillo College.
She was married to Robert (Bob) McKinley, Sr. for 35 years until his passing in 1997. With young children, they made tough sacrifices and moved several times while Bob finished his college degrees and began his teaching career. They finally settled in Amarillo when he became a biology professor at Amarillo College, where he taught for over 30 years. Glenda worked as a bookkeeper for J&E Wholesale Florist and later for Smith Thompson. She passed down what she learned from her parents and grandparents, modeling for future generations the value of hard work and the importance of relying on God, especially in difficult times.
Love was something Glenda felt and something she did. She loved quietly, gently, and deeply. She cherished her family and her church and was clearly a servant at heart. She put others before herself, making sure people felt special, loved, and attended to. When her kids were growing up, they knew they were loved and her priority. When her kids became adults and married, her sons- and daughters-in-law became her kids too, and joined in that assurance. Grandkids, another generation of in-laws, and great-grandkids added to her joy in loving people.
She was kind and wise and strong, an encourager, confidant and wisdom-giver, faith-liver and disciple-maker, and a constant supportive presence. She was an awesome person to have a conversation with—a natural at putting people at ease, the kind of person you never get tired of being with. She was also a Cub Scout den mother, costume maker, bridesmaid dressmaker, Barbi and American Girl doll clothes maker extraordinaire, quilter, a wonderful cook, and maker of the best beans ever. She cooked and baked for schools, church, family, and charity. Cookies and muffins were favorites. Homemade tutti-fruiti ice cream must also be mentioned along with pancakes with blueberry sauce. She was good at so many things, and she shared her recipes and taught her crafts freely.
Glenda loved special occasions, especially Christmas. Many favorite memories center on this holiday as well as New Year’s Eve at her house. She also loved reading, spending the week before school starts watching movies with her great-grandchildren, family vacations, and traveling with friends. These were great opportunities to be together and tell stories. Surely this family will create more cherished shared experiences while thinking of her. We’ll miss holding her hand, her hugs, her beautiful smile, her laugh and giggles with sisters, the twinkle in her eye. And we will honor her and praise God for her and all the things she did for us.
Glenda is survived by her sisters Gwen Hanson, Sharon Remling and husband Don, Janice Johnson, and husband Ken; children Connie Dreher, Donna Cleere and husband Kenny, Sandra Burdis, and husband Charlie, Robert (Bob) McKinley Jr. and wife Amelia, Kris McKinley and wife Gaye; grandchildren Jennifer Dreher Taylor and husband Jason (Tay), Stacie Cleere Felton and husband Jacob, Mike Burdis and wife Tatum, Shelby McKinley (now Modisett), Kaitlyn McKinley and Ian McKinley; great-grandchildren Havyn, Kambree, and Fenix Felton; and an extended family of many nieces, nephews, friends, and others who hold her dear. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant grandson Cameron McKinley,
