Gerald was born June 7, 1929, in Winnipeg, Canada to Rockley and Olive Holman. As a Christian, pediatrician and hospice specialist, he was distinguished in the teaching sciences and will be remembered for the simplicity of his manners, the benevolence of his heart, his commitment to his patients and his pure and unaffected piety.
In all his relationships, both personal and professional, Gerald was wise, candid, diligent and humane; firm of purpose and gentle in execution; justly confident in his clinical judgment yet generously open to the opinions of others; liberal and indulgent of his colleagues but ever mindful of excellence and his duty to community. He was passionate in his commitment to lifelong learning and service, and just as passionate in his wish to instill the same in his beloved family, students, future generations and the medical community.
Gerald was educated at the University of Manitoba, Canada with additional training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was on the faculties of Pediatrics at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Kansas, the Medical College of Georgia, the University of Calgary, the Eastern Virginia Medical School (where he also served as Dean of Medicine and Provost) and the Texas Tech School of Medicine in Amarillo, where he served as Associate Dean of Medicine. He received an honorary degree in Humane Letters from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2005.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Audrey, with whom he shared 59 years of love and laughter. They are blessed with four children; Kevin, Cathryn, Mark and Jeffrey (Hilda) and the gift of six grandchildren; Alicia, Christopher, Matthew, Benjamin, Matt and Zoe.
In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren; Gerald is survived by his brother Donald (Linda), sister-in-law Shirley, brother- in-law Rudy (Lois) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Rockley.
