Gary Don Gifford – February 28, 2018

Gary Don Gifford, 73, of Amarillo, got a first class ticket to Heaven Wednesday, February 28, 2018. A service celebrating his dynamic life will be held at Washington Avenue Christian Church on March 5, 2018 at 10:30 AM, with Bob Mink officiating. Please bring your short stories to share with the family. Cremation and arrangements are under the care of Boxwell Brothers of Amarillo.
Born May 8, 1944 the year of our Lord in Borger, TX to Millie and James Gifford, he was one of 6 children.  Gary and his wife, Deborah, shared this life since 1983 and were married in 1986. His lifelong passions included cars, Boy Scouts, sports, and his family (especially his grandchildren).  During his life, he worked in all areas of sales, and newspaper production ending with over 12 years at Amarillo Globe News. He then worked as a correctional officer for the State of Texas until retirement.
His dedication to youth sports through Kids Inc. and school athletics touched the lives of many and brought him great pride.  He was a man any family member or friend could turn to for advice, help or a “swift kick in the ass” (as he would put it).  Gary loved working on cars, a great sunset, a full “baby makin’ “ moon and driving with the tops off.   The best we can strive for is to live up to the person he saw through his eyes.
Gary is survived by his wife, Deborah Latham Gifford; children Joseph Don Gifford and Jeremy & Ashley Gifford; grandchildren Gavin and Ivy Gifford; siblings include Gene & Clara Gifford, Bill & Helen Gifford, Janie Rook and Terry & Geneva Gifford; In-laws include Lula Ralston, Beau & Linda Latham, Mike & Beverly Malchak, Kay Latham, Roberta Latham, Mike & Carol Latham, Jim & Eva Latham, Chris Latham, Angel & Daren Crisp.  Extended families include many cousins, nieces and nephews.  He also leaves behind many close friends who will miss him dearly.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents James & Millie Gifford, sibling Roy Lee Gifford, Ella Purdom, Nola Ralston, R.B. & Francine Latham, L.W. Ralston and Don Purdom.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Boys Scouts of America or Kids Inc.

Deborah and family, so sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed our visits when Gary brought checks to be signed. Loved his sense of humor and realistic views on life. He will be missed. I can imagine his visits with God now and heaven is brighter having him there.

Deborah, Jeremy & all Gary’s Family,
Gary has been on my mind this past week. There are things he unselfishly did or said on my behalf which helped me & indirectly helped my daughter while I was raising her when I was at the Globe News. I’ve been wanting to thank him. Guess he knows now, anyway. Good man. I’m sorry for you that he’s no longer on this earth; a great loss to you. I am glad to have known him.
    My sympathies,
    Linda Sherrill Parker
