Florence Shelton, age 91, of Amarillo Texas passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2022. Flo was born in Perryton, TX, and was the youngest of 6 children born to Ira and Ella Stark. They later moved to Amarillo and Flo graduated from Amarillo High School in 1949. While at Amarillo High School she was on the yearbook staff, debate club, and was in the National Honor Society. She continued her education at Amarillo College, majoring in mathematics, and was in Future Teachers of America and the Student Christian Association. Flo met Bill Shelton at church and they were married in 1950. They had 3 children, Oliver, Kittie, and Micheal.
Florence was a long-time member of San Jacinto Methodist Church where she served as church secretary for 8 years. She also served as a volunteer in many capacities including participating in the choir and bell choir and leading Bible studies. Throughout her life, Flo demonstrated her devotion to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She did that not only through her study, service, and prayer life, but also through her genuine love for other people. She greatly loved and was proud of her family. Having a visit from family was the best moment in her day and, of course, her face beamed at the sight of them.
Flo enjoyed doing handwork. She was an expert seamstress and spent a lot of her “free” time sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She was an amazing cook and canning expert and canned the bounty of the garden in her backyard. Flo loved to sit in her comfortable chair to read and listen to her music when possible. Many of her friends would speak of her love of playing card games and being with friends.
Florence Shelton was preceded in death by her husband Bill, oldest son, Oliver Shelton, granddaughter Mindy Armstrong and by Flo’s 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
She is survived by her daughter Kittie Wagner and son Micheal Shelton and 2 women she called her daughters-in-love, Myrna Robertson and Nancy Kort. She is also survived by 4 grandsons, Clifton Shelton and his wife Leisha, Michael Shelton, Adam Wagner and his wife Elise and Michael McPherson and his wife Diana; and by great-grandchildren Ashley Ginapp and husband Michael, Lauren Shelton, Jonathan Shelton, Andrew Armstrong and his wife Lizzie, Emma Wagner, Jonah Wagner, Abigail Wagner and Anna Wagner and a great-great-granddaughter, Ryan Ginapp.
The family will host a visitation on Thursday, September 1, 2022, from 5:30 P.M. -7:00 P.M., at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, Amarillo, Texas. There will be a burial service on Friday, September 2, 2022, at 9:00 A.M., at Memory Gardens Cemetery of Amarillo, Texas.
