Elsie Marie Payne

On Sunday, June 5, 2022, Elsie Marie Payne went peacefully into the arms of Jesus at the age of 90.

The celebration of life will be at Boxwell Brothers Memorial Chapel in Dumas, 500 N. Maddox Ave., at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022, with Darrell Wait, pastor, First Christian Church, officiating.  Graveside to follow at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas.

Elsie was born on September 1, 1931, in Truce, Kansas, to Sidney Lester Hewkins and Bertie Evans Hewkins.  On February 15, 1958, she married James Kenneth Payne.  Together, they raised two sons, James and Mark.  The Paynes moved to Dumas in 1969, where they made their home until 2018 when they moved to be closer to family.

Throughout her life, Elsie worked in retail drug stores and jewelry stores, but her primary occupation was a homemaker.  She was an amazing cook and immaculate housekeeper.  She also was an active volunteer at Moore County Hospital for years.  She loved to play golf, and was active in Ladies Golf Association for many years.  Elsie was an avid reader throughout her lifetime.  It was not unusual for her to read 2-3 books a week.  Elsie was a member of First Baptist Church of Dumas.

Elsie was a very caring and generous lady.  She was a loving mother and a wonderful Grandma.  Her greatest joy came when spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren in recent years.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; son, Mark Payne; parents Sidney and Bertie Hewkins; and sister, Frances Langewisch.

Elsie is survived by her son, James and Tammy Payne of Kingsland, TX; grandchildren Josh Payne (Brooke) of Ft Worth, TX, Amber Burt (Jay) of Lindale, TX, Andrew Payne (Brittany) of Roanoke, TX; 5 great-grandchildren, Emma, Austyn, Annemarie, Nolan and Evelyn.

The family requests that donations be made to the Gladney Center for Adoption at 6300 John Ryan Dr, Ft Worth, TX 76132, your church home, or your favorite charity.
