Elaine was born on February 7, 1926, to Juanita Willis Johnson and Edward Bryant Johnson in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She grew up in Amarillo, Texas, and lived there until moving to Oklahoma City in 2017 to be closer to her children.
Elaine graduated from Amarillo High School in Amarillo, Texas, in 1942. She furthered her education at Sweet Briar College, and then attended the University of Oklahoma, where she became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She graduated from OU with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
On August 30, 1947, Elaine married Gene Edwards, her beloved husband of 67 years, until his passing in 2015. They raised three children – Carl Eugene Edwards, Jr., Evelyn Edwards Patterson, and Edward Bryant Edwards. Carl and Eddie reside in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Eve resides in Norman, Oklahoma.
Elaine was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo, where she served as both a Deacon and an Elder. She shared her special gift of teaching in both Sunday school classes and Bible study groups for many years. Elaine’s “Triple T” Sunday school class was instrumental in founding Opportunity School in 1969, which remained her lifelong passion. Upon moving to Oklahoma City, Elaine continued to worship at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Upon Gene’s retirement in 1984, Elaine and Gene shared many special times with family and friends in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Her life was a testament to her strength, grace, and unwavering dedication to her family, as a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her loving family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.
Elaine was predeceased by her mother, father and brother, Edward B.
