Duane Elwin Hopkins, 90, of Amarillo, Texas went peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 28, 2023.
Duane Elwin Hopkins was lovingly known as “Granddad” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His friends called him “Hoppy”. He was born on August 9, 1933, in Bartlesville, OK. His parents were Cecil Elwin Hopkins and
Mary Elizabeth Hopkins and stepmother Alberta Hopkins. He was raised in Galena, Kansas, and graduated from high school in Galena, KS. He was the President of his Senior Class. He also attended Kansas University.
Duane married the love of his life, Lucille Maxine Pierce Wade Hopkins on June 3, 1955, in Denver, CO. They were married for 68 years.
Duane served in the United States Air Force from December 28, 1954 – October 27, 1958. He was an Airman Second Class during the Korean War. He was given the Outstanding Airman Achievement Award of the 823rd Air Division and 379th Supply Squadron, Homestead AFB, FL. Duane was stationed at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida. He was awarded the “Good Conduct” Medal and he was Honorably Discharged from the United States Air Force on December 27, 1962. Duane graduated January 1955, from Lackland Air Force Base Squadron 3706 Flight 1250.
Throughout his career, he developed operations and controls that allowed power plants to produce energy more efficiently. He was an expert in controls. At one point in his career, he and Lucille moved to Elizabethtown, North Carolina to develop a power plant that would utilize waste products to produce energy. Duane retired from Southwestern Public Service as the Supervisor of Electrical and Chemical Maintenance Group. Duane was a Technical Consultant for Utility Engineering Corporation.
Duane was a member of the Instrument Society of America. ISA is one of the foremost professional organizations in the world for setting standards and educating industry professionals in automation.
Duane enjoyed woodworking, furniture repair, working on anything electrical, fishing, reading, avid Dallas Cowboy fan, debating politics, watching old westerns and Fox News, giving advice, and above everything else teaching the Bible, especially to Young Adults.
He was currently a member of The Church at Quail Creek in Amarillo, TX, where he taught life group for young adults. Previous years he was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Amarillo, Texas, where he taught adult Bible study classes and he was a previous member of Coulter Road Baptist Church, Amarillo, Texas, and Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Amarillo, Texas, where he served as a deacon and adult Bible study teacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Elwin Hopkins and Mary Elizabeth Hopkins, and stepmom, Alberta Hopkins; two brothers, C.A. Hopkins, and Mike Hopkins; two sisters, Gaylene Harper, and Carlene Pederson.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Pierce Wade Hopkins of Amarillo, TX; one son, Doctor Ron Hopkins and wife Pixie of Lovington, NM.; two daughters, Lynn Moreland and husband Dale of Amarillo, TX, and Jan Osborne of Amarillo, TX; one sister, Tammy Altman of Joplin, MO; one brother, Cecil Elwin Hopkins; grandchildren, Misty Caldwell, Marty Hopkins, Jeremy Hopkins, Courtney Godwin, Stephanie Kavanaugh, Chelsey Kinney, Landon Moreland, Kolby Osborne, Haven Robinson, Keeley Garcia, Jaylon Clayton, Tiffany Wampler, Amber Rodie; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and many close friends that he made throughout his lifetime.
Duane’s family invites you to celebrate his life at The Church at Quail Creek, 801 Tascosa Road, Amarillo, Texas, on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. His son Doctor Ron Hopkins and Dale Moreland son-in-law will officiate.
