Doug Hubbard, 86, of Amarillo, TX passed away on December 28, 2022.

Services will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Central Church of Christ in the Chapel with Lanny Newton and Ira Purdy officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Doug was born in Wheeler, TX on February 13, 1936, to Estelle and Elmer Hubbard. Doug graduated from Borger High School in 1954. He joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Baltimore. After the Navy, he returned to Amarillo and enrolled in West Texas State University, graduating with a degree in geology. While attending WT, he worked as a Police Officer for the Amarillo Police Department from 1961 through 1964.

He then got a job working with Naval Investigative Service (1964-1972) and was stationed in Naples, Italy, for three years. He worked all over the Mediterranean Sea. Doug then worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1972-1974) on the bank robbery squad. He was stationed in Mississippi and then transferred to San Francisco. He did not want to move his family there and resigned and returned to Amarillo. In 1974, he was part owner of Allstate Security. He was a criminal investigator for the Potter County Attorney’s office (1975-1977). He had his own insurance agency. In 1985, he got a job at the Amarillo VA Hospital as a Police Officer. He then got a job with the VA Inspector General’s Office in Dallas, TX. He worked white collar crimes against the VA. He was promoted to Special Agent in Charge of the office in Houston. While there, he worked a case that involved more than 500 acts of embezzlement that cost the VA over two million dollars. As a result of this, four defendants were charged with varying counts of conspiracy, embezzlement, bribery, money laundering and filing false tax returns.

He received an award for being the Special Agent of the Year in 1995 and received a Special Commendation award from the United States Attorney for the embezzlement case in 1997. He also received a Commendation from the Acting Director of the VA in 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Estelle Hubbard; his brother, Kerry; his daughter, Carolyn; his brother-in-law, Jerry Ball; and his granddaughter, Karlee Messer.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Hubbard, of the home; four children; ten grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two step-children; four step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lois Ball; two sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law.

The family would like to express their thanks for the care that he received from the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Thomas E. Creek Veterans Hospital Nursing Home.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. – 6:30 P.M., Friday, January 6, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
