Doug was born Aug. 17, 1939, in Washburn to Clyde and Marie Cope at the family home, south of Washburn.  At the age of six, the family moved to Claude where Doug started first grade and graduated with the class of 1957.

At an early age, Doug became involved with the family farm.  He was involved with farming and ranching all of his life in addition to other businesses.  Doug was most passionate about his used farm equipment business.  He would try to attend all local area farm auctions and those he could in Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and other parts of Texas.  He enjoyed this adventure most of all and even became a licensed auctioneer.

In the late eighties, Doug was a friend to 4H and was voted man of the year in 1985.  For many years, he was a volunteer firefighter and was always willing to assist any way he could even in his later years.  Doug was a member of the Moose Lodge since 1976, and served as president of the Claude Lions Club, which was involved in many community projects.  He became a member of Claude Baptist Church in 1952.

Survivors include his wife Peggy Cope, of the home; a sister, Connie Blaut and husband Dale, of Amarillo; a niece, Cassie Cleavinger and husband Codi, of Nazareth; a nephew, Brandon Blaut and wife Emily, of Austin; five great-nephews; 2 great-nieces; and several cousins.

The family suggests memorials be to Claude Fire Department, Box 531, Claude, TX 79019; or a favorite charity.

The family will receive friends from 6:30pm-7:30pm, Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at the funeral home in Amarillo.
