Dorothy Joan Williams

Dorothy Joan Williams of Dalhart, formerly of Dumas, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at the age of 87.

She was born in Silverton, Texas on Saturday, May 25, 1935, to Horace Bertram (Red) Heath and Mildred (Summers) Heath.

Joan grew up in Plainview, Texas with her parents and younger sister, Diane, graduating from Plainview High School in 1953. She married Bobby Williams in August of 1954, joining him for a life on the farm. They moved to Hereford, Texas where she became the proud mother of 2 daughters, Lynette and Neila. After a few years in Hereford, bookending two years spent in Wichita, Kansas, Joan moved to Dumas where she would live for over 45 years. In the 60s, she became the mother of 2 additional children, sons Kyle and Bryce, and was devoted to the care and upbringing of her four children and their families for the remainder of her life. While in Dumas, Joan was an active and faithful member of the First Street Church of Christ and made many life-long friends from the congregation and from the community of Dumas.

In 2006 Joan moved to Dalhart, Texas, and made her home at Legacy Assisted Living Center and then at Coon Memorial Nursing Home where she resided until her passing.

Joan was loved and respected by all who knew her for her love of family, and for her kindness, generosity, and genuineness. She was a loving “Mom” to her children and “Mimi” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She joyously attended countless school events, sports events, choir concerts, recitals, graduations, birthdays, and holidays to nurture and support her children and grandchildren. Joan was a trained pilot and some of her favorite stories to tell in her later years were about how proud she was to be able to fly and land a plane. She had a life-long interest in design and planned, built, and decorated two of the houses she lived in during her time in Dumas. She was passionate about creating a home to raise her children in and, eventually, a space to bring together the whole family at the big holiday get-togethers she cherished.

Joan is survived by her children, Neila Williams, Kyle Williams (Mauri), and Bryce Williams (Misty); her grandchildren, Jarod Leonard (Kasta), Brandon Leonard, Kaitlen Oleson, Cole Williams (Cassidy), Sawyer Williams, Taylor Williams (Daniel), Kalysta Williams (Alex), and Rylee Williams; and her great-grandchildren, Avery, Leighton, Landri, Hayes, Aniston and Michael.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lynette Williams; parents, Red and Mildred Heath; and sister, Dianne Heath.

Joan’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022, in the Boxwell Brothers Memorial Chapel, 500 N Maddox in Dumas, at 10:00 a.m., with interment at Dumas Cemetery to follow.
