Donnie Darlene Mitchell, 86, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas.
The daughter of Oscar and Myrtle Doshier, Donnie, was born in Guymon, Oklahoma on August 23, 1937. Donnie graduated from Hardesty High School in Hardesty, Oklahoma and later from Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma. She received her Master’s Degree from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. Donnie was united in marriage with Dwayne Mitchell on August 24, 1958 at the Bethel Baptist Church, Hardesty, Oklahoma. Donnie began her 35-year teaching career in Balko, Oklahoma and the following year Dwayne and Donnie moved to Hugoton, Kansas where she taught typing and bookkeeping. Dwayne and Donnie moved to Spearman, Texas in 1970 where she taught Sophomore English next door to Dwayne’s Senior English classroom for 25 years. They were both recognized for being strong, devoted educators. Donnie was especially known for her grammar knowledge. Dwayne and Donnie raised their two girls, invested in their community, and contributed to their students’ success. Donnie supported Dwayne with the farming operation in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle. She was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church Spearman where she played piano for many years. Donnie was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and she volunteered at Hansford Hospice in Spearman, Texas. She enjoyed playing games and spending time with her family. Donnie encountered many health issues throughout her life, but as a devout Christian, she always trusted in God’s plan.
Donnie was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 59 years. She is survived by her daughters, Paige Sultemeier and husband Chris of Rogers, Arkansas, and Shelley Baloglou and husband Chris of Amarillo, Texas. She was beloved “Mier” to her grandchildren Christin Dixson and husband James of Fort Worth, Texas, Daniel Sultemeier and wife Morgan of Fort Worth, Texas, Caitlin Jinks and husband Thomas of Lubbock, Texas, and Joseph Sultemeier of the United States Military, currently stationed overseas; three great-grandsons Jaxson and Cayson Dixson, and Eric Jinks and great-grandchildren added by marriage: Mia, Oliver, and Jacob Dixson and David and Emily McKinnon. With Donnie being an only child, Dwayne’s siblings and spouses became her siblings too. She loved them dearly along with her many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Boxwell Brothers 2800 Paramount Blvd. Ivy Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Private family burial to follow at Hansford County Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
