David was born September 18, 1947, in Memphis, TX to Thomas and Edna May. He attended Palo Duro High School where he was in the 1966 graduating class.
David loved watching and playing sports. He played football at Texas Tech University from 1966-1971 proudly wearing jersey #83 as a wide receiver. He also golfed and ran track. David was a phenomenal overall athlete. David was a faithful elder and member of Redeemer Christian Church. He loved his church family, and he loved Jesus! David will be remembered for his unflinching kindness, his desire to grow and mature in the Lord, and a profound testimony of redemption that he shared without shame but from a desire to show people how great Jesus was. As an elder at Redeemer, his first desire was the shepherding of the Lord’s people in a kind and gentle way. As a volunteer, he’d joyfully greet new visitors and was for many people the first face people saw when they entered our front doors. He also humbly served at Faith City Mission, preaching the gospel to people in the darkest places in their lives, offering them comfort and hope. But David could and did serve quietly as well. He was a fixture in the halls of the Christian Relief Fund, stuffing envelopes full of letters from children to sponsors and vice versa. Thanks to the generosity of Redeemer’s people, we were able to drill a well in partnership with CRF in David’s honor, serving the people of Benga, Kenya. David used to say that “he thought football was king, but he came to know that Jesus Christ is the real King.”
David was married to Sheila for over 25 years before her passing.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Edna May; wife, Shelia May; half-sister, Betty; and sister, Louise.
David is survived by his children, Kelly Brown and husband Jeremy of Mansfield, TX, Blair Stagner, and Shawn Stagner; grandchildren, Leila Brown, Devin Macdonnell, and Elexia Brown; great-grandchildren, JoJo, Janiah, and Eliya; siblings, Tommy May, and Ann Jarrell; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
