David Betancourt

In loving memory of David Betancourt, who entered the gates of heaven on November 14, 2023 at the age of 61.

Rosary will be said at 6:00 PM, Friday, November 17, 2023 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Mass will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 18, 2023, at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

David was born in Kingsville, Texas on June 18, 1962, to Raul and Maria Betancourt. He spent his early years on the King Ranch before relocating to Amarillo. David pursued his education in Amarillo Independent schools, concluding at Caprock High School. David’s career journey led him to manage Popeye’s Chicken in the early ’80s and later, Levi Strauss, eventually retiring from Hastings Distribution Center.  David, a devoted prayer warrior, touched many lives at the Guyon Saunders Resource Center and Faith City Mission, earning the affectionate nickname “Pope” for the countless prayers he lifted. Passionate about football, he avidly supported his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, and found joy in listening to Tejano music.

David is survived by his daughters Stephanie Rodriguez of Richardson, Natasha Betancourt of Amarillo, and Crystal Pon of Del Rio, and son David and wife Ashley Betancourt and son Julian Betancourt of Amarillo. His sister Susie Betancourt Lozano and Husband Rosalio, brother Daniel Betancourt and wife Candy, brother Juan Betancourt and wife Erma all from Amarillo.  He leaves a legacy in the hearts of his grandchildren: Alexis Rodriguez, Isaac Betancourt, David Betancourt Jr., Romeo Betancourt, Julian Betancourt Jr., and Lexus Pon. He is also survived by additional family members and friends.

He is reunited in heaven with his parents, Raul and Maria Betancourt, and preceded by siblings Paul Betancourt, Joe Betancourt, and Maria Murguia. David’s spirit of generosity lives on through memorial contributions suggested to the Guyon Saunders Resource Center, Faith City Mission, and the Salvation Army. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
