Dorothy Munden Archer, 94, died Saturday, May 18, 2024.
Born on Christmas day, December 25, 1929, to Alma Lund Munden and Homer Munden, she grew up in Dallas, Texas. She left home at sixteen to attend Texas Women’s University and the University of Texas, where she majored in journalism.
While at the University of Texas, Dorothy’s friend Mary Archer asked Dorothy if she would attend an upcoming event with her brother John, who was also a student at UT. Dorothy agreed. That first date was one of many more to come, and Dorothy married John Robert Archer on June 17, 1949, at her parents’ home in Dallas. The couple lived, worked, and had two children in Dallas while John attended UT Southwestern Medical School.
Dorothy and John moved to Amarillo, Texas in 1952 where they started John’s medical practice, made their home, and added three more children to their family. After raising her five children, Dorothy managed the office at her husband’s medical practice until they retired.
Throughout her life, Dorothy remained proud of her Norwegian heritage and the fact that she was a “city girl from Dallas.” She loved nature and had a green thumb, growing beautiful plants and flowers that flourished in her backyard and in her sunroom, even during the winter. She also loved dogs, was an avid fiction reader, and enjoyed spending time at the Palo Duro Club and the Spanish Peaks area of Colorado, where the family had property for many years. Most of all, she loved to laugh with her family while sipping a diet Dr. Pepper.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Homer Munden, and her beloved husband of 55 years, John Archer, M.D.
A fun and loving mother, “Grandmom,” and great-grandmother, she is survived by her five children and their spouses: Mike Archer and wife Jeanne, of Denver, CO; Jim Archer and wife Carolyn, of Amarillo; Jeff Archer and wife Jenny, of Amarillo; Susan Archer Carroll and husband Jim Carroll, of Sherman, TX; Melinda Archer Rogers and husband Bob Rogers, of Arvada, CO. She is survived by eleven grandchildren: Andy Archer and wife Margit; Julie Archer; Ben Archer and wife Sara; Sam Archer and wife Ashleigh; Ryan Archer; Jason Archer and wife Morgan; Elizabeth Pae and husband Charlie; Gray Rogers and wife Stephanie; Amy Oefinger and husband Matt; Courtney Carroll; Blake Carroll and wife Michelle. Dorothy also had eighteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dorothy’s life will be celebrated at a private family gathering.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorials be made in Dorothy’s name to Planned Parenthood
