Cleta Reyes Bustos – April 18, 2016

Bustos Obit PicCleta Reyes Bustos, 85, of Amarillo, passed away Monday, April 18, 2016.

Cleta was born in Maxwell, TX, on March 11, 1931.  She was a hard worker, often working in the vegetable and cotton fields.  She married Eduardo D. Bustos on March 29, 1951, at St. Margaret Mary Church in Pharr, TX.  They lived for many years in the Rio Grande Valley.  Together, they ran a grocery store called “Bustos Gro.”  Since Cleta spoke English and Spanish, she was often sought out by the local residents who needed her help with paper work or making phone calls.  In 1962, they moved to Amarillo, TX.  Cleta was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Mary’s, and St. Laurence Catholic Church.  She was active in helping the schools including St. Laurence and Alamo Catholic high school.   A member of the Guadalupana’s Rosary Altar Society, she worked in cleaning the church for Sunday services.  She was known as the “Burrito Lady” and loved to cook for her large family.  Cleta provided babysitting for many kids, and she was always excited when she would encounter them during their high school years.  She was a big advocate on getting an education.  Her first daughter graduated from Alamo Catholic High school and her remaining 9 children graduated from Palo Duro High school, including one Valedictorian.  Several of her children went on to receive their college degrees from Amarillo College, West Texas A&M University, and Texas Tech University.  She was especially proud of her grandson who graduated with a master’s degree in engineering from Texas Tech University.   Her life revolved around her family, and she set the example by always creating large family functions.  She once said, “No one misses Christmas at my house!”

Her mother,  Bernarda Tenorio Reyes, died in 1938 when Cleta was only 7 years-old.  Her father, Luis Reyes, preceded her in death in 1987.  She is preceded in death by 3 sons who died shortly after childbirth.  Cleta’s only brother, Manuel Reyes, died in 1964.  Her sister, Tomasa Diaz, passed away in 2012.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lupe Egoodkin and husband Alan, Gloria Bustos, Edward Bustos, Jr., Estella Lopez and husband Perfelio.  Sylvia Bustos, Enrique Bustos and wife Esther, David Bustos and wife Monica, Rosemary Carrillo and husband Gus, Christine Vara and husband Orlando, and Johnny Bustos and wife Jessica, all of Amarillo.  She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, over 30 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandsons.    Her younger sister, Gloria Aguilar, lives in San Antonio, TX.

Viewing will be from 3:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, 04/19/2016 at Boxwell Brothers, 2800 Paramount Blvd.  On Wednesday, 04/20/2016, viewing will be from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.  Rosary will be at Boxwell Brothers on Wednesday at 6:30 pm.  Funeral services will be at St. Laurence Catholic Church, 2300 N. Spring, on Thursday, 04/21/2016, at 2:00 pm.  Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.
