Charles was born on June 2, 1933, in Lockney, TX to Walt and Donna Nell Broadhurst. He grew up an All-American boy, enjoying the outdoors, ranching, and shooting BB guns. He played football and basketball at Gruver High School and was a member of the 1950 state championship basketball team. At a young age, he fell in love with Jesus, surrendered his life to full time ministry, and faithfully served various beloved congregations as a pastor for 45 years…First Baptist, Lockney, TX, Central Baptist, Aurora, CO, First Baptist, Hale Center, TX, Calvary Baptist, Borger, TX, First Baptist, Friona, TX, Southcrest Baptist, Lubbock, TX, First Baptist, Littlefield, TX, and retiring from ministry in 1995.
He married his high school sweetheart, Carolynn Cator on August 25, 1953, in Gruver at her family ranch. He faithfully loved and endlessly served her until her death, just two days shy of their 60th wedding anniversary.
He was a graduate of Hardin Simmons University and attended Southwestern Theological Seminary.
God, his family, history, and sports were his greatest passions in life. During his retirement years, he spent countless hours pouring into the lives of others through Bible study and mentoring men. He also had a deep appreciation for Texas Panhandle history, specifically Hansford County and the Cator Ranch, where he courted his bride, Carolynn. Through his dedication and pride of the pioneer spirit, he wrote a book to honor the Cator legacy.
He loved supporting his children and grandchildren through all of their activities, passions, and endeavors. He had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed laughing and carrying on long-running jokes with those that he loved, especially his grandchildren. He was very intentional about making sure that his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids knew that they were loved and treasured through visits, sweet cards, and regular phone calls. He had the privilege of baptizing his three children and six grandchildren, and actively nurtured their individual walks with Jesus until his last day on Earth.
