Carolyn Sue "Susie" McCarty
If a life well-lived is measured by the love you give, the happiness you share, and the memories you leave behind, then Sue McCarty (lovingly called "Susie" by her grandchildren) lived a spectacular life.
Born on November 28, 1944, in Florida to James Carrol and Wanda Sheriff, Sue made her grand debut into the world before heading to Amarillo, Texas, as an infant—a town that would forever claim her heart. She graduated from Tascosa High School and later pursued a degree in home economics and education at Amarillo College and the University of Houston proving early on that she was as practical as she was graceful.
On December 22, 1966, she married her soulmate, W. Ken McCarty, in a love story that could only be described as perfect. Together, they built a family and a legacy that will carry on for generations. Sue’s love for Ken remained, even after his passing, as she continued to surround herself with the family they loved so deeply.
A devoted mother to Melanie and Alan, and the world’s most enthusiastic cheerleader to her six grandchildren—Avery, Will, James, Riley, Aaron, and Jameson—Sue never missed a basketball game, piano recital, school event, or milestone. She was always present, dressed perfectly, clapping the loudest, and cheering the hardest.
Sue was the kind of friend everyone hopes to have: thoughtful, dependable, and always ready with a kind word or a meaningful gesture. She poured her heart into her civic groups, delighted in “lunching” with her friends, and had a knack for creating community wherever she went.
At First Baptist Church, Sue found a purpose and joy as a greeter. Sundays weren’t just for sermons—they were for seeing familiar faces, welcoming new ones, and sharing her smile.
Her home was always a sanctuary of warmth, creativity, and delicious smells. Whether it was her famous zucchini bread, wild rice soup, or yes, scrambled eggs, her grandchildren flocked to Susie’s kitchen for meals made with love. She encouraged their creativity, letting them paint, craft, and dream, every time they came over — which was often.
Sue’s Christmas decorations were legendary—perhaps a nod to her December wedding anniversary. Every year, her home sparkled and glowed with holiday magic, a tradition that brought her immense joy and set the season’s tone for her family. Even this year, her spirit lives on in the glittering ornaments and twinkling lights she so adored.
Sue was a fierce competitor at the card table, especially when playing Canasta. Rarely missing a game, she was part of multiple card groups that brought her laughter, friendship, and a few hard-earned victories.
Her dog, Mollie, was her constant companion and will undoubtedly miss her the most. But if there’s one thing Sue taught us, it’s that love never truly ends. We are confident we’ll see her again.
Sue was preceded in death by her beloved Ken, her husband and the love of her life. She is survived by her daughter Melanie and husband Jerry Don Thompson; her son Alan and wife Cortney McCarty; her grandchildren Avery, Will, and James Thompson; Riley, Aaron, and Jameson McCarty; and her brother-in-law Tom L. and wife Jane McCarty.
Her life was a symphony of love, laughter, and grace, and she leaves behind a family and community forever imprinted by her life.
In memory of our Susie, hug your loved ones a little tighter, play a round of cards, or whip up a batch of zucchini bread in her honor. Most of all, enjoy Christmas and every blessing it brings.
