Bobby Joe Byrd

Bobby Joe Byrd, 90, of Amarillo, Texas passed away on January 28, 2024.

Visitation

with the family will be from 3-4:30 p.m., Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 5, 2024, in the chapel at First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Bobby Joe Byrd was born in Childress, Texas on December 10, 1933, to Roy E. Byrd, Sr. and Oneita Cate Byrd.  He grew up in Canadian, Vernon, and finally Amarillo where he was a proud Amarillo Sandie and star track runner.  His athletic ability won him scholarships to Texas A&M, West Texas State University, and Hardin-Simmons University where he met and married the love of his life, Carolyn Carver.

They began their life together in Odessa, Texas teaching school.  While in Odessa, their two sons, Robert and Tracy, were born.  A move to Canyon followed with Bob teaching and coaching at Canyon ISD.  An Army veteran since ROTC in college, Bob began working full time for the National Guard in Amarillo as the AST for ten years.  He then went back to Canyon ISD in Administration, but eventually returned to his love of teaching at Canyon Jr. High and Valleyview Jr. High.  He finished his career in education as Assistant Principal of Valleyview Jr. High School.  He was a deacon at First Baptist Church and belonged to The Canyon Masonic Lodge as well as the Scottish Rite in Lubbock.

Following retirement, Bobby and Carolyn moved to Angel Fire, New Mexico where they lived for 28 years.  They were members of Angel Fire Baptist Church and worked faithfully with the Angel’s Attic ministry of AF Baptist Church in Eagle Nest, NM.  They often helped out with Cowboy Evenings at Moreno Valley Ranch and Bobcat Pass.

In 2022, Bob and Carolyn moved back to Amarillo where they joined First Baptist Church.  Bob left this world for his Heavenly home on January 28

leaving a legacy of faith and love including 67 years of marriage to his wife Carolyn.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy E. Byrd, Sr. and Oneita Cate Byrd, and his brother Roy E. Byrd, Jr., and great-grandson Noah James Weisgerber.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn, sons Robert (Linda) and Tracy (Lisa), five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and his sister, Annice Goodell Duncan.
